Third International Conference on Nuclear Knowledge Management: Challenges and Approaches. Programme and Book of Abstracts2016
AbstractAbstract
[en] Full text: In 2011, FANR officially started the establishment and development of a nuclear knowledge management (NKM) program. During the past period, the program went through different challenges, obstacles and successes. Some of current FANR NKM initiatives and practices considered as new solutions in the field of KM practices. For example, using knowledge resource matrix, KM process integration and others. However, applying new practices and tools does not mean that FANR NKM found solutions for all the challenges that can be faced by similar KM programs, challenges like preparing for identifying critical knowledge required in the operation phase period, or identifying and capturing the establishment phase and construction knowledge. FANR management are aware of those challenges and are working as one team with internal and external stakeholders to solve them on a priority basis through open discussions, direct directives, collaboration and benchmarking, as well as strategic planning and supporting innovative solutions. The methodologies and practices that it will share in the conference might change some NKM programs’ implementation approaches, however, it is certain that something new related to NKM implementation philosophy will be picked up from this case study. AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper will present the experience gained in establishing a nuclear security infrastructure when developing a nuclear power programme within the United Arab Emirates. UAE decided to establish a nuclear power programme and formalized its decision in a policy paper in 2008. Then, the UAE established its nuclear security legal framework, including the roles and responsibilities of entities involved in the implementation of a nuclear security regime in UAE, in accordance with the ratified International Instruments. The development and implementation of a nuclear regulatory framework, in close cooperation and assistance with IAEA, was the next step. In parallel, UAE ensured the development and the maintenance of its capabilities in the nuclear security field. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Federal Law No. 24 of the United Arab Emirates of 1999 aims at protecting and conserving the quality and natural balance of the environment. AbstractAbstract
[en] This report presents an overview of the economics of the petroleum and natural gas industries in Abu Dhabi. Oil policy, onshore oil operations, private oilfield operating companies, the gas liquefaction company, and drilling, tanker, chemicals, fertilizer and oil distribution companies are discussed. Major projects in the Abu Dhabi oil sector are listed with names of the developments and clients given and details of cost. Names of potential agents, sponsors and joint venture partners are given, and Abu Dhabi's major oil fields are indicated on the map. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The effects of oil shocks and macro policy changes in the United Arab Emirates are analyzed. A theoretical model is developed within the framework of the Dutch Disease literature. It contains four unique features that are applicable to the United Arab Emirates' economy. There are: (1) the presence of a large foreign labor force; (2) OPEC's oil export quotas; (3) the division of oil profits; and (4) the important role of government expenditures. The model is then used to examine the welfare effects of the above-mentioned shocks. An econometric model is then specified that conforms to the analytical model. In the econometric model the method of 'principal components' is applied owing to the undersized sample data. The principal components methodology is used in both the identification testing and the estimation of the structural equations. The oil and macro policy shocks are then simulated. The simulation results show that an oil-quantity boom leads to a higher welfare gain than an oil-price boom. Under certain circumstances, this finding is also confirmed by the comparative statistics that follow from the analytical model

Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources: Maintaining Continuous Global Control of Sources throughout Their Life Cycle. Proceedings of an International Conference2015
Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources: Maintaining Continuous Global Control of Sources throughout Their Life Cycle. Proceedings of an International Conference2015
AbstractAbstract
[en] The paper presents the organization to manage an event involving radioactive material outside nuclear facilities in the United Arab Emirates. The legislative framework for emergency preparedness and response to radiological event was only consolidated during the last few years. In a first step, based on this framework, a national organization to manage events involving radioactive material from the non-nuclear sector was established. Moreover, an event in 2011 in the United Arab Emirates regarding a radioactive source challenged the emergency organization. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Geologists in charge of a detailed lineament mapping in arid and desert area, face the extent of the land and the abundance of eolian deposits. This study presents a semi-automatic approach of extraction of lineament, different from other methods, such as the automatic extraction and manual extraction, by being both fast and objective. It consists of a series of digital processing (textural and spatial filtering, binarization by thresholding and mathematic morphology ... etc.) applied to a Landsat 7 ETM+scene. This semi-automatic approach has produced a detailed map of lineaments, while taking account of tectonic directions recognized in the region. It helps mitigate the effect of dune deposits meet the specifications of arid environment. The visual validation of these linear structures, by geoscientists and field data, allowed the identification of the majority of structural lineaments or at least those tried geological. (Author)
