AbstractAbstract
[en] An algorithm to extract the multiplicity and the higher moments of a multiplicity distribution from the measured counting rates of multiple coincidences is described. In the statistical averaging process a direct transformation to the central moments is performed which results in a well converging procedure to obtain the moments. Important aspects of error analysis and of numerics are outlined. The generality of the formalism allows applications beyond nuclear physics. Guidelines for optimizing an experimental set-up are given. (orig.)

(orig.)Source

AbstractAbstract
[en] Detection of adsorption, prediction of adsorption, and overcoming the adsorption problem are discussed. Two approaches to overcoming the adsorption problem are: to change the system in such a way as to eliminate adsorption of the radiochemical involved and to make use of the erroneous data obtained from the adsorbed radiochemical

AbstractAbstract
[en] The principle and program of introduction of data on γ-γ- coincidences into the computer program are described. By analogy with the principle of accounting for γ-line intensities while constructing a system of levels according to the reference levels and γ-line spectrum, the ''leaving'' γ-transitions are introduced as an artificial level parameter. This parameter is a list of γ-lines leaving the given level or the lower levels bound with it. As a result of introducing such parameters, the accounting for the data on γ-γ-coincidences amounts to comparing two tables of numbers: a table of γ-line coincidences (an experimental one) and a table of ''leaving'' γ-transitions of every level. The program arranges the γ-lines in the preset system of equations with regard to the γ-line energies, their intensities and data on γ-γ- coincidences, and excludes consideration of the false levels. The calculation results are printed out in tables

AbstractAbstract
[en] The arrangement is used to determine the total activity and/or the activity distribution in a body by moving it past a set of at least four detectors whose axes are perpendicular to the direction of motion, and form a cross in such a manner that the detector axes are off-center. The detectors are housed in collimators whose openings are square or rectangular, in the latter case the longest side of the rectangle is parallel to the body axis. The collimators blankoff a different part of the body for each detector. (DVP)

(DVP)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Relations are derived permitting in the application of the relative method of activity or radionuclide concentration determination, the calculation of the minimum total detection time with the required statistical accuracy (maximum permissible error) and its optimal distribution for measuring the individual components (the activity of a sample, the standard and the background). The relations include the contribution of all considered variable components to the standard deviation of the variable and also permit assessing determination accuracy obtainable in the given time limit. For rock samples measured, graphs are shown for the relative share of the detection time of the activity of the sample, standard and background in the total measurement time and for the dependence of the relative standard deviation as against the optimal value for cases when the activity of the background or of the standard is neglected. The rates of the standards and the background were considered to be constant and equal to 50,000 and 400 imp/min, respectively. (B.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A photon-counting panoramic optical detector system has recently been installed at the European Southern Observatory. The system detects and digitally integrates photoelectron events simultaneously in 4096 pixels. High-speed RAM/ROM processors are used to control data-taking, and manipulate and display data in real-time as integration proceeds. The detector is interfaced to an HP21MXE computer via CAMAC, an observatory standard. The role of the computer is largely supervisory: during integrations the detector runs automatically thus freeing the computer for 'user-servicing' tasks such as data display and reduction. (Auth.)
