[en] Full text: The ANTARES AMS facility is now well established with respect to routine measurement of the long-lived radioisotopes 14C, 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, and 129I, and supports a rich research program in environmental science, with emphasis on archaeology, global climate change and nuclear safeguards. New directions in applications of AMS to biomedicine and health studies are in progress. In addition, over the past 3 years a concerted effort in the development of an AMS measurement capability for actinide isotopes has recently been realised with the successful detection of 236U. The broad picture of this diverse activity - in applications and methodology - will be covered in order to bring you the latest news

AbstractAbstract
[en] Particle accelerators have been developed more than sixty years ago to investigate nuclear and atomic phenomena. A major shift toward applications of accelerators in the study of materials structure and composition in inter-disciplinary projects has been witnessed in the last two decades. The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has developed advanced research programs based on the use of particle and photon beams. Atmospheric pollution problems are investigated at the 3 MV Van de Graff accelerator using ion beam analysis techniques to detect toxic elements in aerosol particles. High temperature superconductor and semiconductor materials are characterised using the recoil of iodine and other heavy ions produced at ANTARES, the 10-MV Tandem accelerator. A heavy-ion microprobe is presently being developed at ANTARES to map elemental concentrations of specific elements with micro-size resolution. An Accelerator mass Spectrometry (AMS) system has been developed at ANSTO for the ultra-sensitive detection of Carbon-14, Iodine-129 and other long-lived radioisotopes. This AMS spectrometer is a key instrument for climate change studies and international safeguards. ANSTO is also managing the Australian Synchrotron Research program based on facilities developed at the Photon Factory (Japan) and at the Advanced Photon Source (USA). Advanced projects in biology, materials chemistry, structural condensed matter and other disciplines are being promoted by a consortium involving Australian universities and research institutions. This paper will review recent advances in the use of particle accelerators, with a particular emphasis on applications developed at ANSTO and related to problems of international concern, such as global environmental change, public health and nuclear proliferation

[en] Full text: Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) began at ANTARES in late 1991. Many technical improvements and upgrades to the AMS measurement system have taken place since then. The AMS Centre routinely measures 14C (to better than 1% precision), 36Cl and 129I. The capability to measure 10Be and 26Al, is established although further development is still in progress. A capability to analyse Actinides is being established and is the subject of another paper to this conference. This paper reviews some of the more recent technical improvements to the facility. For our 14C analyses a new gas stripper system and high resolution ExB velocity analyser have been installed and are in routine operation. The gas stripper is also used for most other isotopes. A new 90 degree spherical ESA allows 129I measurements without the need for time-of-flight analysis. Installation of a critical insulation flange in the isotope cycling system has permitted bouncing of 12C- and the measurement of 13C/12C ratios. A complete set of Dowlish tubes now allows spark free operation to 8 MV for our 10Be and 36Cl measurements. The very recent installation of pelletron chains is being assessed

AbstractAbstract
[en] A presentation of the new electrostatic accelerator facility called the VIVITRON is given, following the starting period during which the first 16 experiments using EUROGAM have all been successfully completed. Special emphasize is put on new concepts used for the construction of the machine. The first preliminary results from EUROGAM experiments are shown together with the other equipment which will be used soon and which are mainly the outcome of European collaborations. The perspective for reaching 30 MV maximum voltage is discussed. (author). 7 refs., 10 figs

These beams have been provided both directly and after further acceleration by the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC). AbstractAbstract
[en] The geological processes of glaciation and surface weathering which have moulded and continue to shape our landscape, are inextricably related to the dynamics of climate change. Earth Scientists have long sought an analytical technique based on radiometric methods that would quantify both temporally and spatially, the chronology of glacial cycles and erosion rates. Such a technique is now developing based on the in-situ production by cosmic rays of the long-lived cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be (T1/2=1.5 Ma), 26Al (0.7 Ma) and 36Cl (0.3a) in exposed rocks, surfaces and within the first meter or so of the Earth's crust. Although only a million atoms of 10Be are produced during a 100 ka exposure period per gram of rock, AMS can be applied to measure this telltale signal. Their build-up over time can be utilised as radiometric clocks to elucidate the exposure history of geomorphic formations and surfaces. Alternatively, if exposure has been sufficiently long for the in-situ signal to reach equilibrium, an average erosion rate can be determined. The applicability of the technique depends on the radioisotope half-life - in simple terms it works best over exposure periods of 5ka to 5 Ma (for 10Be) and can identify erosion rates from 0.1 to 10 mm/ka

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Alto project means the installation of an electron linear accelerator inside the experimental area of the tandem accelerator of the nuclear physics institute of Orsay (IPNO, France). This linear accelerator comes from CERN where it was operating as a pre-injector for LEP. This equipment will allow IPNO'teams to perform fast kinetics studies in a domain different from that of ELYSE accelerator. The time resolution will not be as high as that of ELYSE (picosecond) but will be sufficient (microsecond) to produce free radicals in aqueous and gaseous media. The main expectations of this installation can be classified according 3 axis: 1) basic research (mainly the study of nuclear matter through photo-fission, 2) research and development of accelerators (by providing a test bench for new high frequency systems and superconducting components), and 3) applied research for industry concerning: biochemistry under irradiation, radiation sensibility, DNA breaking, food and drug sterilization and behaviour of electronic components under irradiation. This rapport details the research program that could be achieved with this equipment, describes its contributions in terms of economic development, cooperation with industry, student training, and specifies the needed investment and the operating and maintenance costs.
