AbstractAbstract
[en] We have proposed a double drift bunching scheme where one can obtain a bunching effect equal to that of a six-harmonic buncher by using only two harmonics mixed in optimum proportions. In this case one has to apply voltages with frequencies ω and 2ω (instead of only ω) on the first buncher and 2ω on the second buncher. The optimization of buncher parameters such as the voltage amplitudes of the various harmonics and the separation between the two bunchers has been carried out using linear programming technique

AbstractAbstract
[en] A theoretical method is proposed for predicting the properties of the backward propagating cyclotron harmonic waves from the simple dispersion curve for perpendicular propagation. This method is illustrated for the frequency range 1 < ω/ωsub(c) < 2, where ω and ωsub(c) are, respectively, the wave and electron cyclotron frequencies, and is applicable from very low to infinite plasma densities. The behaviour of the backward propagating cyclotron harmonic wave in the whole propagation space and then in the real space can be easily deduced. The method can be extended to any dispersion branch of backward cyclotron harmonic waves. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Many radio-frequency heating methods involve conversion of an incoming wave to another mode which only propagates within the plasma and is ultimately damped. A method previously used to consider electron cyclotron heating by the O mode is extended to other mode conversion phenomena. From the properties of the dispersion relation in the neighborhood of the mode conversion point, differential equations for the mode amplitudes are constructed, in a well-defined way, which give energy conservation in the absence of damping. An analytic solution gives the transmission and conversion coefficients in terms of parameters defining the local behavior of the dispersion relation. The technique is applied to a number of problems, showing that they can all be solved by elementary algebraic manipulations of the local dispersion relation. The phenomenon of electron cyclotron emission also falls rather naturally into this mode conversion picture. It is also suggested that the method of dealing with cyclotron emission may have some relevance to the more general problem of energy transport across a magnetic field. The technique, therefore, brings together into a unified theory a number of problems which have been treated by diverse, and usually more complicated, mathematical techniques in the existing literature

AbstractAbstract
[en] The theory of harmonics of the cyclotron resonance has been developed for the case of the interaction of electrons with a static short-range potential. The absorption coefficient of the electromagnetic field of the frequency by a two-dimensional system of electrons non-interacting with each other in a quantizing magnetic field has been calculated

AbstractAbstract
[en] Propagation of waves nearly perpendicular to the equilibrium magnetic field and incident to the second electron-cyclotron harmonic layer is investigated in an inhomogeneous weakly relativistic plasma. The resonance region is treated by a boundary layer analysis, and the solutions are matched to the geometrical optics solutions outside the layer. This approach allows one to investigate the transmission, mode coupling, reflection, absorption, and the effects of relativistic broadening. This work extends a previous investigation with the purely perpendicular propagation. It is shown that the mode conversion and reflection rapidly cease to be of importance outside a narrow propagation cone as the doppler broadening becomes predominant. The geometrical optics approach, which breaks down in the purely perpendicular propagation, then becomes valid. It is also shown that the transmission coefficient and the reflection from the high-field side incidence are not altered within this cone
