AbstractAbstract
[en] This work studies the gamma radiation effects on some physical and chemical parameters of the banana prata in order to establish the correspondent alterations of the conservation periods and the irradiation feasibility at commercial scale. The bananas were irradiated by Cobalt-60 (GAMMABEAM-650) using an 1.00 kGy/h dose rate. In two experiments the fruits were treated under two storage conditions which were identified as CA treatment (an after irradiation direct storage under room temperature condition), and as CF treatment (after irradiation, an initial storing in a cold storage room followed by a storage under room temperature condition). All laboratory analysis were performed under room temperature conditions. (author). 75 refs., 32 figs., 12 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Using the microbial radiation resistance distribution given by AAMI, the unsterilized fraction of the products was calculated at various bioburden levels, and the results obtained were shown in the dose response curves. With increasing microbical bioburden, the shoulder of the curves is becoming more remarkable. The appearance of the curves is resembled to that of multi-targets survival curves, and this fact can be realized from the analogy that the microbes on the products are to be the targets and the products are to be the cells in the target theory. AbstractAbstract
[en] The JECFI recommended worldwide clearance of irradiated spices, including onion powders, up to 10 kGy in 1980. The Netherlands have been irradiating spices since 1970 and together with Belgium, have thus processed several thousand tonnes. However, since no other European country has cleared irradiated spices, there are still barriers to trade. In the U.S., the FDA regulations allow spice irradiation, up to 30 kGy. However, existing large EtO fumigation systems, and conservatism in the industry (despite stringent government regulations regarding worker exposure to EtO) as well as lack of consumer interest and acceptance due to ignorance and misinformation, have allowed only very slow progress in the U.S. Out of a total of 300,000 tons of spices and aromatic herbs, only about 3000 tons will be irradiated in 1985. In Europe it is expected that about 15-20% of the total spices and herbs will be irradiated in 1985 and about 25% in 1986. Labelling is an issue in the U.S. and may represent another impediment. However, a number of surveys have indicated that proper information and education, and in particular that of the woman consumer, are required to overcome reluctance to introduce this technology. [en] Physical, chemical and technical as well as economical background of food preservation by irradiation have been performed. The radiation sources and the elements of radiation chemistry connected with their use in food irradiation process have been shown. The problems of dosimetry and endurance of dose uniformity for processed products have been also discussed. The other methods of food preservation and their weakness and advantages have been also presented and compared with food irradiation method

AbstractAbstract
[en] The effect was studied of the binary combination of preservation methods, i.e., of a reduced intensity of thermosterilization and diverse doses of ionizing radiation, on the content of microorganisms in single-component tinned products (tinned beef and gravy, tinned pickled cauliflower) and in tins containing two components (beef with cauliflower) over a period of 115 days of storage at a laboratory temperature of 20 degC ± 2 degC. The experimental results showed that the chosen combined process of preservation guaranteed sufficient storage stability to the products over several months of storage. An ionizing radiation dose of 5 kGy was sufficient for both types of model samples, this both from microbiological, nutritional aspects (some group B vitamins, vitamin C, -SH groups, etc.) and with regard to organoleptic properties (outlook, color, odor, flavor, consistence, juiciness). The problems will further be studied. (author) 2 tabs., 4 figs., 14 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The invention is applied for killing micro-organisms and harmful bodies in medicinal one-way articles with reference to foodstuffs. The purpose of the invention is to make better use of gamma and X-ray radiation with great homogeneousness of dose. This problem is solved by the material taking up a position near to the source of radiation and also a position far from the source of radiation during irradiation. The positions are selected so that the material positioned close to the source of radiation partly shields the peripheral areas of the material positioned far from the source of radiation. The material is irradiated preferably from four sides in each position. (orig.)

(orig.)Original Title

[en] A Limiting Case Model has been developed which describes the dependence on radiation dose of the proportion of items, in a population of items subjected to irradiation, which are contaminated by one or more organisms. This model is independent of the initial distribution of numbers of micro-organisms on items and represents a conservative approach to estimation of the proportions of non-sterile items in an irradiated population of items. AbstractAbstract
[en] Effective control of processed food and medicines is crucial for the maintenance of public health. Issues of wholesomeness, quality, efficacy and safety are of paramount concern to both consumers and regulatory agencies alike. Laws and regulatory are put in in place to ensure minimum standards of practice by the various operators in the food and pharmaceutical sub-sectors, such as will guarantee that the regulated products (food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and bottled water) they deal in satisfy all the parameters of quality, wholesomeness, efficacy and safety. National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) was established to enforce all relevant laws and regulations on food and drugs among other-regulated products. NAFDAC has put in place appropriate administrative structures and procedures in its efforts to fulfill its mandate. Finally, the agency is in the process of extending its regulatory and control activities to cover irradiated food products in order to safeguard public health

[en] The invention concerns a process for irradiating medicinal one-way articles and foodstuffs with gamma rays or X-rays to kill micro-organisms and harmful insects. The purpose of the invention is to improve the homogeneousness of dose and the use of the radiation. This problem is solved by the material to be irradiated being situated in a transport unit, so that there is a region of lower density at the centre then at the peripheral areas. The transport unit must be irradiated from at least two sides by a source of radiation. (orig.)
