AbstractAbstract
[en] The magnetization M of single crystalline TmB4 has been investigated in high magnetic fields up to 54 T and shows considerably anisotropic behavior. In the ordered antiferromagnetic state, the M for B parallel [001] reaches the saturation magnetization Ms at about 4 T accompanying with plateaux at 1/8 Ms and 1/2 Ms. On the other hand, for B parallel [100] and [110], the 1/2 Ms state and the saturation of M were observed at much higher field above 30 T. The results are discussed in relation to the effects of magnetic frustration and the crystalline electric field

AbstractAbstract
[en] The ground state of the appropriate generalization of the impurity Anderson model for valence fluctuations between two realistic Tm+2 and Tm+3 configurations is obtained, in the narrowband limit, using the Lanczos' method. This limit describes the strong-coupling fixed point of renormalization group treatments for intermediate valence and Kondo impurities. The resulting ground state is highly degenerate and contains states of total angular momentum 0, 3/2, 2, 5/2, 4 and 9/2. The crystal electric field or an applied magnetic field should split the degeneracy favouring the magnetic states. As found in TmSe, the Tm magnetic moment is anomalously small

AbstractAbstract
[en] The interaction in HoI3-NaI, HoI3-CsI, TmI3-CsI, ScI3-NdI, Sc3-KI, ScI3-RbI systems was studied by the method of differential thermal and X-ray phase analysis. According to the results of the differential thermal analysis, HoI3-NaI and ScI3-NaI systems were classed with the eutectic type. However, the X-ray phase analysis revealed the presence of a new phase in the solid state of alloys containing approximately 75 mol% NaI. One chemical compound (K3Sc-I6) was found in the ScI3-KI system and two chemical compounds of Me3LnI6 and Me3Ln2I9(Me-Cs, Rb; Ln-Ho, Tm, Sc) type were found in each of HoI3-CsI, TmI3-CsI, ScI3-RbI systems

AbstractAbstract
[en] In the present work a study was made of the magnetic susceptibility of selenides of compositions Me2Se3 (Me=gadolinium, dysprosium, holmium, and erbium) and Tm3Se4. For holmium and thulium selenides this characteristic was determined for the first time. Powders of the compounds chosen for investigation were prepared by reacting hydrogen selenide with oxides of the relevant REEs. All the yttrium-group REE selenides studies were found to be paramagnetic materials. The magnetic susceptibility as temperature curves exhibit no unusual features and, in the temperature range investigated, obey the Curie-Weiss law. The magnetic moments of the REE ions in the selenides are close to the calculated values for the trivalent states

AbstractAbstract
[en] Spectral investigation of Tm3+ in thulium nitrate has been carried out. For the first time, the second derivative spectrum of this complex has been recorded. The results of a least squares fit of the energy levels and oscillator strengths of the bands are reported in terms of interaction parameters and Judd-Ofelt parameters. Radiative transition probabilities for fluorescence levels 3P0, 1I6, 1D2 and 1G4 of Tm3+ in thulium nitrate are estimated. (author)
