AbstractAbstract
[en] In the UK the body responsible for regulating the safety of civil nuclear installations is the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. This paper explains the overall strategy for communicating with the public, identifies new initiatives for greater openness and accountability within the UK and gives examples of how the NII has been viewed as a result of its participation in three major public inquiries. AbstractAbstract
[en] The position of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) as a research and development organisation is outlined. It is now a trading fund and offers research facilities to industry on a contract basis. This will be further promoted. The Authority's main business remains the development of systems producing economic electricity. An example of this is the work on the proposed commercial fast reactor. However, the expertise and specialised facilities developed for this have applications in other areas relevant to British and overseas industry. An example of this is the technology developed at the UKAEA's Harwell laboratories for assuring the firm attachment of steel platforms to the sea bed. Radioactive tracers are added to underwater cement grouting enabling the progress of grout injection to be monitored. Oil recovery techniques, chemical scaling problems, pipeline flow, safety and reliability, the development of a pocket gamma radiation dosimeter, structural integrity testing and problem solving, development of electric propulsion systems for space satellites, advanced robotics and computing services are all areas of UKAEA research and development interest and capability. AbstractAbstract
[en] Courses in Radiological Protection have been organised at Leeds by the NRPB since its formation, and prior to that by the Leeds Centre of the Radiological Protection Service. From the outset it seemed essential that such courses should contain a practical element, and accordingly a number of exercises were drawn up. Since that time further exercises have been added, often in response to a specific requirement from a customer or group of customers. Most of the exercises have involved the design and construction of 'one-off' items of equipment, a number of which can be considered to represent interesting approaches towards radiological protection teaching. The construction of a 'second generation' of hardware has focused attention on the objectives and design features of the exercises, which in turn has prompted a desire to publish a series of short papers describing the pool of exercises that is currently available for inclusion in the various courses run by the NRPB Centres. The first of these papers puts the series into context and provides a background to the descriptions of specific exercises. (author)

[en] The Monopolies and Mergers Commission made a series of recommendation about the way AEA Technology should operate. These recommendations are made about the structure and organisation of AEA, its corporate policy, the financial aspects, management, use of assets, industrial relations, pay and employment policies, the efficient use of manpower, investment, pricing, marketing, project management, safety and the quality of goods and services. The response of AEA to each recommendation is given in parallel with the recommendation. Many have already been implemented or are in the process of implementation. (UK)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This document comprises a report compiled for the Department of Trade and Industry by Barclays de Zoete Wedd, on options for the future of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (AEA). The report summarises recommendations from the study and offers some proposals for how privatisation, if selected as a management strategy, would be carried out. Structures and systems necessary for privatisation are considered as are likely markets for AEA products and services. (UK)
