AbstractAbstract
[en] Beginning in the early 1940s, the US government constructed and procured numerous facilities for use in nuclear energy development and production programs. During the past 40 years, many of these have fulfilled their intended purposes and have been shut down. In 1978, the Department of Energy established the Surplus Facilities Management Program (SFMP) to manage the safe caretaking and eventual decommissioning of government-owned nuclear facilities that are radioactively contaminated and have no current use. There are now approximately 300 such facilities in the SFMP, located at 20 separate sites across the United States and Puerto Rico. Some of the current decommissioning projects underway at these sites are briefly described

The abstracts are grouped by subject category as shown in the table of contents. Entries in the subject index also facilitate access by subject, e.g., Abandoned Sites/Decontamination. Within each category the arrangement is by report number for reports, followed by nonreports in reverse chronological order. These citations are to research reports, journal articles, books, patents, theses, and conference papers from worldwide sources. Five indexes, each preceded by a brief description, are provided: Corporate Author, Personal Author, Subject, Contract Number, and Report Number

[en] More than 2000 deep boreholes have been made in the Parisian Basin - more than 1000 of them in the Ile-de-France Region, mainly in Seine-et-Marne and Essonne departments. Although drilling leaves fewer marks on the landscape than mines, its effects on the environment are more insidious and long-term. For this reason, measures must now be taken to avoid lasting damage to this underground water supply. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In 1987, the Government of Hungary closed the uranium mining in the Mecsek Mountain. Data are presented on the uranium reserves in the abandoned site of West-Mecsek. The history of uranium mining and the total amount of produced uranium are up to 31 December 1997 is presented. Some countries in Europe also abandon uranium mining, others develop it (Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Canada, Australia etc.). The Hungarian uranium reserves should be registered as a part of the national assets. (R.P.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] During Frankford Arsenal's 161 years of operation, a variety of activities were conducted, including munitions manufacture, materials R and D, development of propellant and cartridge-actuated devices, and various procurement missions. In 1976, the facility was declared as excess to Army needs, and plans were put in place to decontaminate and clean up the Arsenal before transferring the property to the General Services Administration (GSA) for subsequent disposition and release for unrestricted use. The contaminants present at the Arsenal included depleted urnaium (from development and test activities associated with armor-piercing rounds) and radium (used for fire-control instrumentation/equipment). The US Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency contract for decontamination and cleanup of the 110-acre facility was awarded to Rockwell International's Energy Systems Group in September 1979. The program was completed in January 1981, 1 month ahead of the contract deadline, and the property is now being released by GSA for unrestricted use. 6 figures, 2 tables

[en] The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and the petroleum industry have agreed that industry must take proactive measures to reduce the number of long term inactive wells in Alberta. This interim directive outlines the requirements of the Long Term Inactive Well Program, and provides a schedule for industry to reduce the number of inactive wells. EUB estimates that there are currently 35,000 inactive wells in Alberta, 10,000 of which have been inactive for more than 10 consecutive years. These wells pose a financial risk to the Abandonment Fund which was established to help fund the abandonment of orphan wells. The Long Term Inactive Well Program was created based on the recommendations of a joint government/industry committee, and will operate for five years. 5 tabs

[en] The 576 abstracted references on nuclear facility decommissioning, uranium mill tailings management, and site remedial actions constitute the tenth in a series of reports prepared annually for the US Department of Energy's Remedial Action Programs. Citations to foreign and domestic literature of all types--technical reports, progress reports, journal articles, symposia proceedings, theses, books, patents, legislation, and research project descriptions--have been included. The bibliography contains scientific, technical, economic, regulatory, and legal information pertinent to the US Department of Energy's Remedial Action Programs. [en] In July 1977, DOe/Headquarters directed DOE/NV to design a decontamination and decommissioning plan for the Gnome site, 48 kilometers southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The plan incorporated three distinct phases. During Phase I, both aerial and ground radiological surveys were conducted on the site. Radiological decontamination criteria were established, and a decontamination plan was developed based on the radiological survey results. During Phase II, site preparatory and rehabilitation work was completed. The actual land area decontamination was accomplished during Phase III with conventional earthmoving equipment. A gravity water injection system deposited 36,700 metric tons of contaminated soil and salt in the Gnome cavity. After completion of the decontamination and decommissioning operations, the Gnome site was returned to the Bureau of Land Management for unrestricted surface use

[en] The Farmers' Advocate of Alberta pronounced on Section 122 and Section 129 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). In its view Section 122 should be strengthened because it provides inadequate legislation for the conservation and reclamation of specified lands. The first issue to be modified relates to the duty to reclaim, while the second issue relates to releases and their misuse. Based on experience to date, the Farmers Advocate of Alberta expressed support for Section 129 of the EPEA and considered it appropriate as is, for the purposes for which it was intended
