[en] The planning meeting was held May 21-23 2008 at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The purpose of the meeting was to establish a network on building computational model for resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering. This course of action was recommended by program officer Dale Koelling after the initial submission of a proposal for a Computational Materials Science Network to Basic Energy Sciences. The meeting consisted of talks and discussion. At the end of the meeting three subgroups were formed. After the successful formation of the team, a new proposal was written which was funded by BES. Since this was a planning meeting there were no proceedings. The program and titles of talks are given.
[en] This section contains a summary of research on the genetic effects of high LET radiations. Specifically, a comparison is made between the genetic effects of internally deposited (testis) 239Pu and 241Am, and external fission neutron and 60Co gamma irradiation in mice. End points included: dominant lethal mutation rate; sperm head abnormality rate; and reciprocal chromosome translocation frequency in spermatogonia
[en] The computer facility of the ANL Chemistry Division is described. A central facility providing all real-time support, the system provides each on-line experimentalist with all the advantages of a moderate-sized computer while also providing the isolation enjoyed by individually dedicated minicomputer systems. The system contains 56K works of core, 75 Mbytes of disk storage, an on-line plotter, two nine-track tape drives, high-speed line printer, card reader, card punch, and paper tape reader--punch. [en] A method for numerically recovering the coherent modes and their occupancies from a known mutual optical intensity function is described. As an example, the technique is applied to previously published experimental data from an x-ray undulator source. The data are found to be described by three coherent modes, and the functional forms and relative occupancies of these modes are recovered.
