AbstractAbstract
[en] The polarisations of four excited levels in 40Ar+ ions have been measured at different times after excitation in a beam-tilted-foil experiment. It has been determined that, within uncertainties typical of present beam-foil work, the possible transfer of polarisation resulting from optical cascades has no observable effect on time-resolved quantum-beat measurements. AbstractAbstract
[en] Within the framework of the study of the unusual behaviour of relativistic secondary particles formed in the interaction of 72 GeV 40Ar within a 1 cm thick Cu target, the wide-angle emission of heavy fragments has been studied with a CR-39 solid state nuclear track detector. Within the laboratory-frame forward angular interval θ, with 50 < θ < 430, we observed such heavy fragments with a frequency F = (0.2+-''0.1)%, expressed as a fraction of the total primary Ar flux. Evidence is presented that these fragments are possibly 'projectile fragments' within the charge range 6 ≤ Z ≤ 18, and that they have relativistic energies. No attempt is made to interpret this possibly 'new' phenomenon. However, it is pointed out that these 'wide-angle emitted' heavy fragments cannot be related to any 'unusual' behaviour (observed at wide angles) by projectile fragments in other experiments, provided that these fragments have 'normal'reaction cross-sections. AbstractAbstract
[en] The dynamics of violent collisions for the 40Ar + natAg system is studied between 27 and 57 MeV per nucleon. The dominance of binary dissipative collisions, accompanied by an increasing abundance of pre-equilibrium emission for central collisions, is demonstrated over the whole bombarding energy range studied. The experimentally observed correlation between the emission angle of the light partner and the damping of the relative motion yields information on the in-medium nucleon-nucleon section. Finally, for the most violent collisions, a saturation of the temperature for the heavy partner is observed at a value of about 7 MeV. At the same time, this saturation is also observed in the multiplicities for evaporated light charged particles. (authors)

[en] Energy and isotope distributions were measured for peripheral reactions induced by 40Ar at 213 MeV/nucleon. The data are consistent with the predictions of abrasion-ablation models. The influence of correlations in the nuclear ground state is discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] The potassium 40-argon 40 method was used for testing the results of a previous geochronological dating of the Gemeride granites in the Slovak (West) Carpathians. The radiometric dating confirmed that the southern part of the area is of the Alpine age while the northern part was found to be of the late Variscan age. The difference is attributed to the fact that in contrast to the previous views the Gemeride granites originally are polyphasic intrusions which evolved by intricate magmatic, postmagmatic, superimposed hydrothermal, and tectonic processes. This is also supported by the distribution of trace elements. Using the radiometric method the above processes may be traced back to the Upper Cretaceous. (L.O.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) in 40Ar has been studied by 172.5 MeV α particle inelastic scattering. The main goal was to record data as clean as possible both by using a very pure target and taking advantage of the larger peak to underlying continuum ratio generated by high energy projectiles.
