[en] The perceived role of national laboratories in energy and environmental research and development is examined from an industrial perspective. A series of tables are used to summarize issues primarily related to the automotive industry. Impacts of policy on energy, environment, society, and international competition are outlined. [en] It is evident that most rubber components in the automotive industry are subjected to repetitive loading. Vigorous research is needed towards improving the safety and reliability of the components. The study was done on an automotive rubber jounce bumper with a rubber hardness of 60 IRHD. The test was conducted in displacement-controlled environment under compressive load. The existing models by Kim, Harbour, Woo and Li were adopted to predict the fatigue life. The experimental results show strong similarities with the predicted models.
[en] The automotive industry has shown increasing interest in tube hydroforming. Despite many automobile structural parts being produced from cylindrical tubes, failures frequently occur during tube hydroforming under improper forming conditions. These problems include wrinkling, buckling, folding back, and bursting. We perform analytical studies to determine forming limits in tube hydroforming and demonstrate how these forming limits are influenced by the loading path. Theoretical results for the forming limits of wrinkling and bursting are compared with experimental results for an aluminum tube.
[en] The objective of this paper is to compile information that will help researchers and practitioners to use EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) in reference to the relevant anti-counterfeiting strategies in supply chain under deceptive buying environment, in order to make prudent decisions according to the “best industry practices” based on ISO (International Organization for Standardization) available in the automotive industry. Product counterfeiting is a worldwide business issue which effect firm’s supply chain (supply chain sustainability) directly or indirectly. The study used a quantitative research design technique where categorical and numerical variables are used to determine relationships among variables where a survey is used as a main research method. Futuristically, the developed instrument using EFA would lead to the CFA (Confirmatory Factor Analysis) to answer questions regarding validity of the instrument in the concerned population subgroups. This empirical study is done after conducting Initial Survey where pilot testing procedure of Initial instrument was followed to make sure that questions asked were good enough (reliability analysis) to capture the impacts of ANCT-INT (Anti-Counterfeiting Strategies Initiative) on the FSP (Firms’ Supply Performance). The Pilot test process of Initial Survey Instrument is conducted prior to an actual data collection (confirmatory survey) stage that can helps researcher in refining the confirmatory survey instrument. The pilot test is conducted under the patronage of PAAPAM (Pakistan Association of Automobile Parts and Accessories Manufacturers) secretariat in Lahore. [en] South Korean authorities launched in January 2019 an ambitious plan for the development of the hydrogen car. This plan is agreed by big cities authorities that consider it as an efficient means to improve air quality. This plan has a consequent budget for research laboratories and car manufacturers. The weak point is that the Korean energy mix relies strongly on fossil energies to produce electricity and the only way to produce hydrogen in a green way is water hydrolysis. The hydrogen strategy of the South Korean authorities is likely to lead to an increase of Co2 emissions unless the governmental ban on nuclear energy is lifted. (A.C.)
[en] Laser welding has an increasing role in the automotive industry, namely on the sub-assemblies manufacturing. Several sheet-shape parts are laser welded, on a dissimilar combination of thicknesses and materials, and are afterwards formed (stamped) being transformed in a vehicle body component. In this paper low carbon CO2 laser welding, on the thicknesses of 1,25 and 0.75 mm, formability investigation is described. There will be a description of how the laser welded blanks behave in different forming tests, and the influence of misalignment and undercut on the formability. The quality is evaluated by measuring the limit strain and limit effective strain for the laser welded sheets and the base material, which will be presented in a forming limit diagram. [en] Purpose: The objective of this paper is to assess the level of sustainability of the UK automotive supply chain considering simultaneously the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social and environmental) representing the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach. Design/methodology/approach: The assessment of the automotive SC’ sustainability is based on the framework proposed by Salvado, Azevedo, Matias and Ferreira (2011) and uses the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method to aggregate economic, environmental and social indicators into a unique index. A case study on the UK automotive industry is used and the data do perform this study is collected from the sustainability reports of the UK’ automotive companies. Findings and Originality/value: The proposed framework represents an important benchmarking tool, offering managers the possibility for assessing the sustainability behaviour of its supply chain and compare it with other supply chains. Once identified the dimension of sustainability where the company or the supply chain is worst performer managers can work closer to their supply chain’ partners in order to improve the performance of those dimension of sustainability. Research limitations/implications: One limitation of the suggested approach is related to the ambiguity of the sustainability’ indicators selection and the definition of weights for each sustainability dimension. Practical implications: The assessment of the SC sustainability by using the suggested framework to compute a SC sustainability index offers managers an opportunity for assessing the level of sustainability of each individual company and the corresponding SC in a very easy way. It also represents an opportunity for improving company performance. In this way managers can use the information on the sustainability index to help adjust their company's behaviour and improve their economic, social and environmental performance. Originality/value: The proposed framework represents a contribution in the area of index construction and a valuable component of organizational management systems and monitoring programs.
[en] The paper present some new results focused on an aluminium high temperature alloy, obtained by 'melt spinning method'. alloy composition, processing conditions, resulted structures and the influence between them are presented. There are studied the two zone structures of the alloy and the relation between processing conditions and the characteristics of the zones, with implications on mechanical behavior in real conditions. The final conclusion show that is possible to control the structure in order to improve material behavior. (author)
[en] Aluminum alloy 535 could be used for automotive and marine applications because of its good corrosion resistance against mild alkaline and salt spray exposure. The majority of components from this alloy are usually produced by sand casting because it is prone to hot shortness and has poor fluidity when poured in permanent moulds. In an attempt to improve its castability in permanent moulds, casting characteristics such as casting fluidity and hot tear resistance have been studied. In addition, the effectiveness of titanium, boron, scandium, zirconium and a combination of selected elements from this group as grain refiners were evaluated. It s shown that alloy 535 exhibits good casting fluidity when poured with adequate metal superheat and that there is significant improvement in hot tear resistance following grain refinement. In this revision, the standard developed integrates ISO and JASO standards and be adopted in PROTON Engineering Standard (PES). This part of PES specified the dimensions, test methods, requirements, and performance for wire cables that are already in practical use but have not been standardized by any Malaysia and industrial standards.
