AbstractAbstract
[en] The objective of this study was to detect the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) prospectively in patients receiving Radiotherapy (RT) during and after treatment. 140 consecutive cancer patients referred for radiotherapy and their care givers were included. All patients were administered the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) conducted at intake, just before starting RT, after finishing the course of RT, and at 3-4 months follow-up. Anxiety and depression are detected frequently in patients receiving RT both prior to treatment and later during follow-up

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of this study is to use wave-tank testing to predict spill behavior at sea. Spill researchers have used large outdoor wave tanks like Ohmsett to simulate at-sea conditions as the method of oil spill research and testing for more than 40 years. However, facilities such as Ohmsett, which is the largest of these wave tanks used for studying chemical dispersion of oil spills, are seen to be in need of further development to keep pace with new concerns. Over the past ten years, Ohmsett researchers have been committed to addressing decision-makers' questions concerning the inapplicability of bench-scale methods and the difficulty of sea tests. The factors they focused on were the limited operational effectiveness of dispersant s; the persistence of dispersant in treated oil slicks; procedures for monitoring effectiveness of dispersant applications; and the ability to extrapolate from bench-scale tests to predict dispersant performance at sea. Overall this paper presents the challenges of this work and briefly reviews the results so far.

AbstractAbstract
[en] This study examines the psychological strains experienced by patients undergoing radiotherapy, as well as their somatic complaints and the possible connection between these two aspects. The sample consisted of 87 cancer patients, 64 female, 23 male. We used two standardized clinical instruments, one Zerssen's list of somatic complaints ('Beschwerdeliste' in German) and Zerssen's questionnaire of wellbeing ('Befindlichkeitsskala' in German). These two research instruments were implemented four times: at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of radiation, and three month afterwards. Results: Both the psychological state of well-being and somatic complaints remained at approximately the same level during the whole course of therapy. The state of well-being increased significantly after therapy, which is indicated by the decrease in the number of psychological impairments, whereas the score for somatic complaints remained the same. We observed a general tendency on the part of the patients to play down their situation. Sex differences were not observed. The discussion of the results includes their implication on the doctor-patient relationship. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Highlights: • All participants benefitted from their involvement with teaching students. • Primary motivation for participation was the opportunity to tell their story. • Influencing student behaviour & understanding of vital importance to participants. • Participants still affected by cancer-related trauma gained most. • Post traumatic growth may potentially occur in participants by teaching students. - Abstract: IntroductionThe Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) recently mandated the integration of the service-user voice into all aspects of allied healthcare education in the UK. However, the potential benefits and harms of this integration to service users are largely unknown. This study aimed to determine service user perspectives on relaying their personal experience of the cancer treatment pathway to students in an undergraduate Radiotherapy and Oncology programme.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The balance of military forces is meant to prevent war. But it is a very precarious balance, which becomes all the more dubious when the deterrent is no longer psychologically effective: when the country attacked is deterred from striking back with nuclear weapons. A unilateral disarmament above the overkill level would be possible without endangering the balance. It would improve the climate for mutual disarmament. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Experience and research confirm: man is a social being. Loners only confirm that they are the exception to the rule. The ability to deal properly with this fact requires of management a corresponding knowledge of the most important group dynamic factors and the basic functions of working groups. Also, it is valuable to know and be able to deal with the, just as dynamically effective, roles which spurs the group to work or form a team (or retard it). (author) 6 figs., 1 tab
