AbstractAbstract
[en] Ferritin was purified 33,000-fold from the plasma of patients with idiopathic hemochromatosis. The plasma ferritin was labeled with 131I and injected into 2 normal men. Clearance was found to be relatively slow, with 50% 131I-ferritin remaining in the plasma at 27-30 hr. The fraction of plasma ferritin that bound to concanavalin-A was found to be cleared more slowly than the nonbinding fraction. These findings confirm our previous suggestion that glycosylation is a major factor prolonging the survival of ferritin in the plasma, but differ from the results of earlier studies in experimental animals and preterm infants, which indicated very rapid plasma ferritin turnover

AbstractAbstract
[en] Llamas were provided with a large rumen fistula, and the transfer of blood urea into the temporarily isolated rumen, cleaned and filled with test solution was measured. Plasma urea clearance due to transfer of blood urea across the rumen wall should indicate changes in its permeability to urea. Clearance values were highest with CO2 or with high concentrations of butyric acid. Permeability was low when food was with-held and when no volatile fatty acids were present in the solution. The permeability of the rumen wall to blood urea can be altered significantly. These changes can affect blood urea transfer more extensively than changes in the plasma urea concentration within physiological ranges

AbstractAbstract
[en] The measurement of 59Fe clearance from the plasma is a well established means of investigating erythropoiesis. The effect of variation in plasma iron concentration, contamination by 59FE not bound to transferrin and 59Fe counting accuracy on the 59Fe clearance curve are described. A valid analysis of the clearance curve cannot be made unless these errors are eliminated. A technique is presented which allows the clearance of [59Fe] transferrin to be studied free of extraneous influences. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A radioimmunoassay for vasopressin which permits the estimation of plasma levels as low as 0.25μIU/ml was developed. The average plasma level of ADH after overnight water restriction was found to be 5.20μIU/ml. A hypersecretion of ADH was provoked by the intravenous injection of 1-2mg of nicotine. In 10 volunteer subjects this stimulation by nicotine provoked ADH secretion which reached a maximum between 2 and 15 minutes after injection; the hormone plasma level reached an average value of 21.3μIU/ml

AbstractAbstract
[en] Using an ion exchange resin, a sensitive radioimmunoassay for plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) was developed. This assay was characterized by the absence of blank values, an excellent recovery rate, great sensitivity (0.1 pg of AVP was significantly detected) and reproducibility. In 8 normal men, plasma AVP after overnight dehydration was 1.57+-0.17 pg/ml, and dropped to 0.58+-0.11 pg/ml after 20 ml/kg oral water loading. Significant correlations between plasma AVP levels and plasma or urinary osmolality confirm the validity of this assay. In complete pituitary diabetes insipidus (n=4) plasma AVP was undetectable whereas it was frankly increased in Schwartz-Bartter syndrome (3 to 33 pg/ml, n=8)
