AbstractAbstract
[en] A new tendency in integrated reactors conceptual design is to include safety criteria through accident analysis. In this work, the effect of design parameters in a Loss of Heat Sink transient using design maps is analyzed. Particularly, geometry related parameters and reactivity coefficients are studied. Also the effect of primary relief/safety valve during the transient is evaluated. A design map for valve area vs. coolant density reactivity coefficient is obtained. A computer code (HUARPE) is developed in order to simulate these transients. Coolant, steam dome, pressure vessel structures and core models are implemented. This code is checked against TRAC with satisfactory results. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This work was carried out within the frame of TACIS-96 Program (Project r2.09/96). In accordance with the Technical Terms of Reference (TOR) the main objective of the Project was to perform a Leak Before Break (LBB) assessment for the Main Coolant Pipe (MCP) and the Pressurizer Surge Line (SL) of the Reactor Coolant System of a selected reference Unit of a WER 1000, type V-320 NPP (assumed as the Balakovo NPP Unit 2). This has included the following: . definition of a reference methodology for primary piping systems with cladding; . verification of LBB approach applicability to MCP/SL according to the reference methodology defined; . preparation of necessary materials data and validation files; . evaluation of effectiveness and reliability of the leak detection system and the In-service Inspection (ISI) programs (methodologies and qualification); . preparation of a recommendations list to improve the existing information and diagnostic systems; . transfer of know-how from Consortium to sub-Contractor, integrating the feedback of Western LBB experience. AbstractAbstract
[en] The present contribution reports on the AGROTHERM development project, which is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Science and Technology in Bonn. This project is an attempt at a non-polluting utilization of the 'thermal waste' (waste heat) of nuclear power plants by means of an underground pipeline system. The waste heat will be used to increase agricultural yields. By 1976, the pipeline systems had been installed at all test sites. (GSC)

(GSC)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] In solar absorption cooling system, the hot water supplied to a single effect absorption chiller comes from a solar collector heat storage. On the other hand, chilled water of the chiller is stored in reservoir and then is supplied to the cooling system due to the daily demand. The size of cooling system components depends on solar daily insulation, daily cooling load and effective working time of the system. In order to optimize the working condition of the system these factors together with their economic aspects should be kept in mind to reach a logical and rational design. In the mentioned parameters to the optimum working condition of an solar absorption cooling system. By using this approach the optimum design of the system would be obtained

AbstractAbstract
[en] A reference wet/dry cooling system for the Gas Turbine HTGR (GT-HTGR) is presented. The reference system was selected to minimize the design impact on the existing GT-HTGR design and to expedite a preliminary evaluation of the economics of the system. The reference system is identical to the all-dry system, except that a wet cooling tower is used to further cool the water from the dry cooling tower via an intermediate water-to-water heat exchanger

AbstractAbstract
[en] An outcome of the Joint Review Panel that evaluated the proposal by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the Darlington New Nuclear Project was that OPG must undertake a formal quantitative cost-benefit analysis for cooling tower versus once-through condenser cooling water systems. While OPG's analysis concluded the preference for the once-through condenser approach, the possibility for using cooling towers remains. This paper presents an analysis of the different cooling tower designs that could be used for a potential CANDU new build at the Darlington Site. The work was completed in partial fulfilment of the requirements of a capstone design project by a group of nuclear engineering students. The project considered the various cooling tower designs used in similar applications for both nuclear and thermal power plants, and identified the preferred option based on criteria such as: energy penalty, cost, thermal/aquatic effects, social acceptance and land use. AbstractAbstract
[en] The present compilation of structures for discharging cooling water from power stations into rivers is an attempt to make evident developments in the constructional design of such structures and to give reasons for special structure shapes. A complete collection of all structures built in Germany, however, is difficult to realize because of the large number of power stations. For conventionally heated power stations therefore only a selection was made, while nuclear power stations in operation or under construction could almost completely be taken into account. For want of sufficient quantities of water for river water cooling, projected power stations are now almost exclusively designed for closed-circuit cooling so that the required discharge structures for elutrition water from the cooling towers as well as for the emergency and secondary cooling circuits have to be designed only for small amounts of water.
