AbstractAbstract
[en] This invention generally concerns high power gyromagnetic devices, for example gyrotrons, gyroklystrons and tubes with revolving progressive waves. It specifically concerns a high power gyromagnetic device in which a high power wave established in a cavity or a wave guide is diverted from the joint axis of the wave and a hollow beam of electrons, the beam spreading along the axis, towards a beam collector

AbstractAbstract
[en] The radiochemical separation of 88Y from proton irradiated natSrCO3 and alpha-particle irradiated natRbCl, of 86Y from proton irradiated 86SrCO3, and of 87Y from alpha-particle irradiated natRbCl were studied at no-carrier-added levels by two techniques, namely, ion-exchange chromatography using Dowex 50W-X8 and Dowex 21K resins, and solvent extraction using HDEHP. Out of all those methods, the ion-exchange chromatography using Dowex 50W-X8 (cation-exchanger) was found to be the best: the separation yield was high, the chemical impurity in the separated radioyttrium (inactive Sr or Rb) was low (0.5 μg) and the final product was obtained in the form of citrate. The optimized separation method using Dowex 50W-X8 was applied in practical production of 86Y and 88Y via proton irradiations of 86SrCO3 and natSrCO3, respectively, at 16 MeV as well as of 87Y and 88Y via α-particle irradiation of natRbCl at 26 MeV. The tangible experimental yields of 86Y and 87Y amounted to 150 and 5.7 MBq/μA x h, respectively. The yields of 88Y obtained were 0.06 MBq/μA x h and 1 MBq/μA x for alpha-particle and proton irradiations, respectively. Each yield value corresponds to more than 70% of the respective theoretical value. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An absolute calibration procedure for electron cyclotron emission spectrometers is described. It is shown that a large-area blackbody can be simulated by a two-dimensional scan of a microwave source. An equivalent temperature for the simulated blackbody is introduced. A convenient expression is derived for the calibration factor of the system, defined as the detector output voltage divided by the blackbody temperature. The frequency resolution of the spectrometer can be included in the calibration by the use of a swept source. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The National Medical Cyclotron at Camperdown Sydney ceased operations in October 2009 after producing medical isotopes for application in nuclear medicine for approximately 19 years. ANSTO commenced the decommissioning and dismantling of the cyclotron in January 2011 after approval was given by ARPANSA following a detailed submission process. The radiation protection aspects of the decommissioning and dismantling of the 30 Mev National Medical Cyclotron by ANSTO and external contractors are described in this paper. This includes the preparation of a radiation protection plan, activation analysis of the cyclotron and its components and estimating individual and collective doses from available radiological data. The paper will also look at the planning and risk assessment of various work tasks performed, health physics monitoring and controls (both physical and administrative) and a review of individual and collective doses received during the dismantling process. Finally we will go through the challenges, issues and a review of the outcomes.

[en] A numerical study was carried out to find an extension of Trubnikov's formula for cyclotron radiation loss which is valid at relativistic temperatures. It is found that for temperatures up to 1000keV the loss can be fit by minor modification of the original result. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The cyclotron-resonance-maser (CRM) array [1] is a radiation source which consists of CRM elements coupled together under a common magnetic field. Each CRM-element employs a low-energy electron-beam which performs a cyclotron interaction with the local electromagnetic wave. These waves can be coupled together among the CRM elements, hence the interaction is coherently synchronized in the entire array. The implementation of the CRM-array approach may alleviate several technological difficulties which impede the development of single-beam gyro-devices. Furthermore, it proposes new features, such as the phased-array antenna incorporated in the CRM-array itself. The CRM-array studies may lead to the development of compact, high-power radiation sources operating at low-voltages. This paper introduces new conceptual schemes of CRM-arrays, and presents the progress in related theoretical and experimental studies in our laboratory. These include a multi-mode analysis of a CRM-array, and a first operation of this device with five carbon-fiber cathodes
