AbstractAbstract
[en] The article advocates mineral resource mining against fierce environmentalists who can see only the adverse aspects of this branch of industry. The following concepts are argued against: endangerment and permanent disturbance of the environment due to the mining and processing of mineral raw materials; excessive exploitation and selling-out of Czech national mineral resources; and inefficiency of administrative tools to protect Czech mineral resources and environment. It is concluded that mineral raw materials mining does not endanger the environment more than other anthropogenic activities do. Mining on its own is not responsible for the current poor condition of the environment in the Czech Republic, nor is it a source of permanent disturbance of the environment, as often unjustly claimed. The permanently sustainable development programme, referred to in the Environmental Protection Act, should only mitigate some adverse aspects of anthropogenic activities but is not expected to eliminate them altogether because this would imply elimination of their inflicter as such. AbstractAbstract
[en] The author treats of Czechoslovakia as typical of the smaller European industrial countries, summarizes the country's difficulties in keeping abreast of nuclear physics developments, and suggests ways in which the smaller countries can play their part in the development of nuclear physics. AbstractAbstract
[en] Continuing its round of CERN Member States, the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) met in Prague in September*. After the division of Czechoslovakia, which became a CERN Member State in 1992, into two states later that year, this was the first time that ECFA had looked at particle physics in the new Czech Republic. As well as having been reshuffled at a national level, the organization of Czech scientific research has gone through a transition, with its previous clear separation between research in Academy Institutes and in teaching universities now dissolving
