Format and structure of a database on health and environmental impacts of different energy systems for electricity generation1992
Format and structure of a database on health and environmental impacts of different energy systems for electricity generation1992
AbstractAbstract
[en] The paper presents the structure of a model and a database devoted to the life-cycle analysis of industrial products for the assessment of environmental impacts. The data cover a large variety of industrial sectors; the whole life-cycle of the products has to be considered when the environmental impacts are calculated. The author considers that the data format could be standardized in view of exchanging data between different studies and to enlarge the quality of the studies. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Software maintenance for pre-1980 assembly language systems is costly, in large part due to the lack to tooling which today would be considered standard. For many such systems employed in mission critical applications, such as reactor control, the demand for quality further increases the cost intensity of software maintenance. To address this need Previse Inc. proposes an integrated workstation platform combining several tools, within which software maintenance would be made for the remaining software life. The core of this platform would comprise a DBMS environment, within which the target code would become data in a database. In this environment code changes would be treated as transactions to a database, with maintenance of database consistency a core mission of the toolset. Code changes would be verified using a combination of semi-automated database consistency checks and testing using a variety of built-in dynamic analysis tools. This federally supported Previse R and D programme is currently in mid-stream. Though not without implementation problems, confidence remains high that the overall objective, that is to decrease the cost of this software maintenance by 50%, can be met. (Author) 21 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] This research provides the results of a comprehensive in-store study that utilized eye tracking to determine the initial eye attractiveness of signage and displays used in a Toyota retail dealership. Potential car buyers (n = 24) walked randomly through the showroom for the first time, and were asked to view the various signs, displays, video monitors, decorations, and vehicles on display. Research was conducted while the dealership was open in order to include distractions from human interaction. Subjects’ eye movements and the objects viewed were captured using Tobii II eye tracking glasses at 60Mhz. A typical showroom self-tour lasted approximately 4:31 minutes. Subjects were then shown their results and Retrospective Think Aloud interviews were conducted with the subjects to determine positive and negative reactions to the observed objects. Signage measured included those required by Toyota, as well as those created by the dealership. Types of signage measured included digital, video, posters, stand-up cards, and ads placed on the vehicle. Each potential eye attractive object was identified and classified by type (signage, décor, digital signage, vehicle information, etc.). Every subject’s results were analyzed by the number of fixations and the time spent viewing each object. The study revealed that video or digital messaging was not any more effective than static signage, but that placement of the signage was a determining factor in the effectiveness of message receptivity. Many of the non-signage objects received more attention than did certain types of advertising signage. The various attributes of the objects and signs that received positive attention were analyzed as to their eye attractiveness characteristics. Although signage in a retail showroom is believed to be critical in providing advertising and product messages, this study (in its particular environment) demonstrated that signage is not viewed by customers as often as previouly thought.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL's) Remedial Action Program was established to provide appropriate corrective measures at over 140 sites that were contaminated with radioactive and/or hazardous chemical wastes. To achieve this goal, numerous and varied studies are being conducted which will result in the collection of an unprecedented amount of data for the ORNL site. To manage such data effectively and efficiently, a computerized data base is being developed. The data base provides a unified repository for all data generated within the Remedial Action Program, to allow for necessary storage, manipulation, analyses, assessment, display, and report generation. Data base management for the Remedial Action Program is documented in this report by: (1) defining the organization of the data management staff and the services provided; (2) describing the design of the data base, including its management system, organization, and applications; (3) providing examples of the current and anticipated tasks; and (4) discussing quality assurance measures implemented to control the accuracy of the data entries and the security of the data

[en] The subject scope of the Energy Data Base (EDB) is defined, encompassing all technological aspects of energy production, conversion, and efficient utilization, and the economic, social, and political aspects as well. Coverage also includes the basic sciences as applicable. The subject areas within the scope of EDB are defined and hierarchically numbered, and scope notes are provided to define the extent of interest in certain areas, particularly areas of basic research

AbstractAbstract
[en] A pyroprocess engineering and project management system for pyroprocess facility was designed in order to construct PRIDE facility successfully by using systems engineering and requirements engineering. An integrated project management system by applying ISO/IEC 15288 Systems Engineering-System Lifecycle Process was established. A WBS(Work Breakdown Structure) for pyroproces facility was implemented to organize research and development project and to improve problems. A unified database system is described in order to the technical consolidation between others project, a collaboration that shares the pyroprocess information, consistent communication, and the visability of the R and D status
