AbstractAbstract
[en] With the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT), appears the necessity of a protocol to handle the data flow of all the smart devices. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the most used protocol. But, in recent years, new protocols are emerging. Nowadays, the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is one of the most used protocol within IoT, due to its low power and bandwidth consumption. This work presents the implementation of an MQTT protocol into LabVIEW platform providing a powerful tool to assess students training into novel protocols and applications under the IoT paradigm. [en] The local area networks for industrial applications e.g. in nuclear power plants counterparts intended for office use that they are required to meet more stringent requirements in terms of reliability, security and availability. The designers of such networks take full advantage of the office-oriented developments (more specifically the integrated circuits) and increase their performance capabilities with respect to the industrial requirements

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper shows the design of a second-order multi-bit ΔΣ modulator with hybrid structure for ADSL applications. A modified two phase non-overlapping clock generator is designed to let PH2 borrow 12% of the time from PH1, which relaxes the speed of OTAs, comparators and the DEM block. The clock feed through problem of the passive adder is solved by revising the timing of the comparators and the adder. The chip is designed and fabricated in UMC 0.18 μm CMOS technology. Measurement results show that with an oversampling ratio of 32 and a clock rate of 80 MHz, the modulator can achieve 79 dB dynamic range, 71.3 dB SNDR, 11 mW power consumption from a 1.8 V power supply. The FOM is 1.47 pJ/step.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) study is a regular subject on analog electronic subjects taught in the initial phase of electronic engineering courses. This electronic component, often considered elementary, is far from being simple to explain because it covers several concepts, such as three Regions of Operation, two Working Regimes, and two Region of Operation Boundaries. It is not surprising then that students often find it difficult to understand the functioning of this component. The present article describes partially the work developed by a team with a number of students in order to understand the difficulties of teaching/learning the BJT. We present the students’ perceptions from the analysis of several traditional and modern means to support the learning of the BJT. Interestingly, the learning BJT model considered simpler for beginner students corresponds to the model that originally gave it the name i.e. Trans-Resistor (Transistor). (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Existing cross-sectoral models of transport–health interactions have been largely developed based on traditional (mainly aggregate) data sources e.g. travel diaries, traffic counts. Such modelling provides a ‘snapshot’ of the transport system at fixed locations and is prone to data related weaknesses. However dissagregate health equity consequences are needed for policy development and to direct mitigating financial resources. This research harnesses new generation smartphone location data to collect day-to-day movement patterns of individuals via an app (with consent), including mode, route and other information i.e. Track and Trace data. A case study is presented from Newcastle City region (UK), for July 2017 onwards, (circa 2000 individuals). The characteristics of the dataset generated are found to depend on: branding and key features of the app, the subset of the population who engage, the subset that actively retain the app over time, the subset who engage in additional voluntary data collection, e.g. experience sampling, voluntarily offering personal data such as age and gender and voluntarily using features such as correction of mode where the app has mis-recorded. A computed Index of Multiple Deprivation highlights interfaces with established datasources and results show the distribution of transport-health outcomes from transport initiatives by sub-group

AbstractAbstract
[en] Teaching and learning Operational Amplifiers (OpAmps) in electronic engineering courses is a requirement, since they are a type of integrated circuit widely used for implementing simple or complex circuits. As a contribution to improve the way this integrated circuit is included in electronic engineering courses’ curricula, it was designed and implemented a reconfigurable and expandable kit to teach electronic circuits based on the OpAmp uA741. Able to run in a PC, the kit comprises a software application locally interfaced with a hardware platform. This platform includes a circuit with the OpAmp uA741 able to be reconfigured according to a set of parameters defined by a software application. Besides the reconfiguration capability provided by this kit, it also enables the establishment of automatic connections for measuring or applying signals to a reconfigured circuit, plus the ability to simulate the same or other OpAmp-based circuits. This paper provides an overview about the OpAmp uA741 and about its relevance in engineering education. Features and functionalities provided by the kit is described. At the end, supported by a technical demonstration of the kit in an international conference, some teachers’ opinions about their perceptions concerning its adoption in a real educational scenario are presented. AbstractAbstract
[en] The installation of a communication system for transferring results from several experiment laboratories to a computing center is described. The objectives of a useful bit rate of 24 kbs, low connection cost and simple infrastructure, extension of the network to 4 buildings situated within a radius of 300m, and connection in the most standardized fashion possible are attained by using the GIXINET local network and adopting the X25 packet protocol. Bit rates of 17.2 kbs for standard 128 octet packets, and 44 kbs for nonstandard packets (776 octets in this case)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The impact that wireless communications has had for gas and oil producers was discussed. Wireless communication, which has been replacing the traditional formats of radio and telephone data networks, has proved to be cheaper, smaller, and faster than creating privately owned communication networks. With highly developed supervisory control and data acquisition systems - combined with cellular or satellite technology - information from drill sites can be online at the corporate headquarters instantaneously. Eighty percent of Canada's land mass is beyond reach of traditional wireline and wireless services. Research into advanced communications, including telecommunication and mobile applications, yielded lucrative results for service providers such as BCTel, SaskTel, Bell Mobility and AGT. The latest data transmission technology is the cellular digital packet data (CDPD) which will operate over existing cellular networks. However, unlike circuit-switched cellular, CDPD technology provides an airlink where data is secure. It will be available to the marketplace over the course of the coming year. Among other advantages, CDPD will allow producers to remotely monitor production information and downtime alarms from wells and compressor stations. It will also provide fleet operators with the means to monitor operating vital signs on rolling stock
