AbstractAbstract
[en] A non-destructive testing process by Eddy current is described, in which a probe is moved near the part to be tested; the probe is fed with an excitation current at n different frequencies and the components at each of the n frequencies are analysed in the measurement signal delivered by the probe. It is characterised in that its resistive part X in phase with the excitation current at the same frequency and its reactive part Y in quadrature are determined for each components; parts X1 and Y1 of a component at one frequency are modified so that they coincide, in the area corresponding to the defect of a parameter to be eliminated, with parts X2 and Y2 of a component at another frequency; parts X1 and Y1 thus modified are deducted from parts X2 and Y2 and this provides a new set of resistive and reative parts X' and Y', making it possible to obtain a representative curve for which the contribution of the unwanted parameter has been eliminated

AbstractAbstract
[en] When the testing of a given product shows that, owing to a particular shape of this product or to its environment, disturbing effects can hide the presence of harmful defects, use must be made of testing artifices or particular treatments enabling an efficient examination to be made. On this score, many eddy current problems are solved by means of the following processes: - use of specific sensors adapted to the geometry of the product, - spectral analysis of the analog results of analyses, - combination of the results of analyses obtained simultaneously at different frequencies (multifrequency techniques). An example of an application is given for corrugated tubes achieved by hollow and helical milling of smooth tubes

AbstractAbstract
[en] A system is described which organizes the display of analog data on X-Y recorders or storage oscilloscopes. As many as 64 discrete X-Y plots may be displayed in a regular, repeatable 8x8 matrix format. Developed to rapidly display and plot eddy current inspection data from heat exchanger tubes, it may be used on line, but is more efficiently used to transcribe inspection data stored on magnetic tape. The value of the separated feature display system has been extensively demonstrated in field inspections; it generates permanent visible characteristics of anomalies and permits one data analyst to keep up with two inspection teams. AbstractAbstract
[en] This article reviews and assesses the non destructive testing techniques used for locating defects in tubes by electromagnetic processes. These form the basis of many testing devices, the diversity of which results from various factors: range of materials, methods of fabrication, specific defects of the product. There are two distinct main families of devices utilising two different principles: dispersion flow and Foucault currents

AbstractAbstract
[en] Compensation parameters, typical of interference parameters, are produced at various frequencies, depending on the output signals of a coil system. These compensation parameters are then superimposed on the output signals, in order to cancel out the effect of interference parameters on the measurement. With a suitable setting of the working point of an amplifier fed with the output signals, override is avoided and the dynamic range of the amplifier is used to the optimum extent. Good results can still be obtained if the proportion of the interference signal is relatively high compared with the signal measuring the fault. (orig./HP)

AbstractAbstract
[en] New criteria and procedures for determining flaw sizes in tubes by suppression of trouble signals are presened. This is highly valuable for the automation and improvement of tube testing. By four-dimensional regression analysis of the results a high correlation of flaw size and evaluated parameters is found. The new procedure employs complex cross correlation of inspection signals with documented signals of reference flaws. Furthermore inspection spectra including external tube structure interferences are improved by subtraction of stored signals from corresponding calibration samples. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The process works by the eddy current principle. The multifrequency equipment used has an automatic c,mpensation network with zero compensation. In order to be able to recognise impedance changes, the measured values of impedance at the testing frequency used are stored in a data store, and the new values measured are subtracted from these stored values.
