[en] The field of electrical engineering plays a significant role in particle accelerator design and operations. Los Alamos National Laboratories LANSCE facility utilizes the electrical energy concepts of power distribution, plasma generation, radio frequency energy, electrostatic acceleration, signals and diagnostics. The culmination of these fields produces a machine of incredible potential with uses such as isotope production, neutron spallation, neutron imaging and particle analysis. The key isotope produced in LANSCE isotope production facility is Strontium-82 which is utilized for medical uses such as cancer treatment and positron emission tomography also known as PET scans. Neutron spallation is one of the very few methods used to produce neutrons for scientific research the other methods are natural decay of transuranic elements from nuclear reactors. Accelerator produce neutrons by accelerating charged particles into neutron dense elements such as tungsten imparting a neutral particle with kinetic energy, this has the benefit of producing a large number of neutrons as well as minimizing the waste generated. Utilizing the accelerator scientist can gain an understanding of how various particles behave and interact with matter to better understand the natural laws of physics and the universe around us.

[en] The spatial filtering features of resistive grids have become important in microelectronics in the last two decades, in particular because of the current interest in the design of 'vision chips.' However, these features of the grids are unexpected for many who received a basic physics or electrical engineering education. The author's opinion is that the concept of spatial filtering is important in itself, and should be introduced and separately considered at an early educational stage. We thus discuss some simple examples, of both continuous and discrete systems in which spatial filtering may be observed, using only basic physics concepts

[en] A fundamental electrical design methodology using electrical equations for superconducting synchronous generators, taking into consideration the size of the machine components and the performance of the superconducting field winding, has been developed. A fundamental electrical design of a 70 MW superconducting generator developed as part of the Super-GM project was conducted and it was found that the design predictions were in good agreement with the test results
[en] As a safety-security field, the transportation field always encourages and embraces advanced intelligent technologies to reduce risks. Recently, automated driving has received extensive attention from researchers and industries, as it is expected to improve the flow of traffic, to significantly reduce drivers’ errors and thusly increase safety. Though many efforts have put on automated driving, many challenges remain in achieving fully autonomous, resulting in partially automated driving. The role of drivers in a partially automated car is monitoring and taking over driving in specific conditions, which is significantly different from the manual cars. The novel role of drivers induces new human factors issues and challenges to maintain traffic safety. This study tries to investigate these human factors issues involved in the human and automated driving interactions and to propose a framework of electrical engineering and automation-based intelligent technology application to mitigate risks. Specifically, trust, attention, situational awareness, and alarm fatigue were identified as significant human factors issues in automated driving. An electrical engineering and automation-based intelligent framework for monitoring cognitive states and generate warnings was proposed. (paper)

Precise current reference is calculate based on the reactive current curve in China National Grid Code, deration of current is realized in this way by eliminating NS current. [en] 'Streamers, sprites, leaders, lightning: from micro- to macroscales' was the theme of a workshop in October 2007 in Leiden, The Netherlands; it brought together researchers from plasma physics, electrical engineering and industry, geophysics and space physics, computational science and nonlinear dynamics around the common topic of generation, structure and products of streamer-like electric breakdown. The present cluster issue collects relevant papers within this area; most of them were presented during the workshop. We here briefly discuss the research questions and very shortly review the papers in the cluster issue, and we also refer to a few recent papers in this and other journals. (editorial review)
