[en] This paper discusses the basic properties of various versions of the two-variable elliptic genus with special attention to the equivariant elliptic genus. The main applications are to the elliptic genera attached to non-compact GITs, including the theories regarding the elliptic genera of phases on N = 2 introduced in Witten (1993 Nucl. Phys. [en] Using a classical ensemble method, nonsequential double ionization is predicted to exist with elliptical and circular polarization. Recollision is found to be the underlying mechanism, and it is only possible via elliptical trajectories.

[en] New HI detections have been obtained using the Nancay radiotelescope for NGC 2974 and 3962. These results and the large scale distribution obtained for NGC 3962 indicate that the HI-rich elliptical galaxies exhibit common properties which are not easily explained by accretion of an intergalactic cloud. The field aroud NGC 1052 has been mapped and there is an HI connection with the neighbouring galaxies. The HI content of several IO galaxies indicates that the galaxies which are members of groups are relatively HI-rich; this could be produced by additional HI coming from companion galaxies

[en] The aim of this paper is to investigate the existence of solutions of a nonlocal semi linear elliptic equation with an indefinite term. The monotone method, the method of upper and lower solutions and the classical maximum principle are used to obtain our results. (author)
[en] The first results are presented of a statistical study on the milliarcsec structure in a complete sample of active radio galaxies. Many papers have been published on properties of VLBI cores in quasars, but no similar studies have been carried out for galaxies. A 2-stage strategy was adopted for the observations. As the first step, a photograph was taken of all the selected sources, in order to have an indication on the size and flux of the milliarcsecond component. This paper describes procedures for measurement of parameters representing the shapes of the isophotes of elliptical galaxies, and presents results for a sample of 19 elliptical and SO galaxies in the region of the clusters Abell 2197 and Abell 2199. [en] A determination is made of the structure of the Carina dwarf elliptical galaxy on the basis of counts of over 8000 stars on prints made from a CTIO (Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory) 4-m prime-focus blue plate. the ellipticity of Carina is found to be E 0.4 to r 11 arcmin. The tidal radius is 33 arcmin. If its luminosity function is similar to that of M3, then its mass is 5.3 x 10 to the 5th solar masses. In order to verify the constancy of the limiting magnitude from print to print, a substantial fraction of the field is reproduced on more than one print. More than 50 percent of the stars are counted more than once, and no obvious difference in the quality of each print is detected. 11 references
[en] The projected ellipticities of twenty four 'blue' and 'red' globular clusters of various ages and positions in the SMC have been found using isodensity contours. The derived ellipticities have shown that the globular clusters of the SMC are more elliptical than their counterparts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and our Galaxy. The observed ellipticities for both cluster types do not support any age dependence. (Auth.)
