[en] Introduced to construction about 40 years ago, GRC has come of age. It is now widely used all over the world and in quantities very likely greater than most of the other types of fibre reinforced concrete, although it remains less known. A brief history of GRC is followed by review of the basic make-up of this complex composite. Methods of production are identified, properties reviewed and modes of fracture which are unique to GRC are explained. Benefits which are already available and exploited by its users are summarised and the wide spectrum of current applications of GRC is outlined. (paper)
[en] Each dish-shaped insulating element in the form of a thick-walled hollow cylinder cut open has a support structure. This consists of profile bars running into the longitudinal eges and annular shell segments on both front sides. The outer walls and inner walls are formed of thin metal foil. Unstable mineral fibre mats are suitable as thermal insulation material. The insulation elements can, if necessary, be matched to pipe elbows, T ducts, pipe flanges and valves. (DG)

Diese besteht aus in den Laengskanten verlaufenden Profilstaeben und an beiden Stirnseiten Ringscheiben-Segmente. Die Aussenwaende und Innenwaende sind aus duennen Metallfolien gebildet. Als Waermedaemmaterial eignen sich instabile Mineralfasermatten. Die Daemmelemente koennen im Bedarfsfall an Rohrboegen, T-Stutzen, Rohrflansche und Armaturen angepasst werden. (DG)
[en] A simple method of visual observation of hollow fibers within fiberglass cloth has been developed. This visualization can aid in determining the contribution these fibers make toward leaks observed in fiberglass-reinforced epoxy resin pressure or vacuum vessels. [en] Different scale tests to explore the influence of fiberglass mesh on the fire behavior of expanded polystyrene (EPS) have been conducted. Micro scale combustion calorimeter to measure the heat release rate per unit mass, heat release capacity, and the total heat release of EPS and as well as the fiberglass for milligram specimen mass has been used. Cone colorimeter bench scale burning tests with the EPS specimens and EPS-fiberglass compound specimens have been carried out. The heat release rate per unit area, ignition times, and the derived minimum igniting heat fluxes were determined. Comparative burning tests on the fire spread tendency of EPS and EPS-fiberglass compound specimens have been carried out. It was established that the fiberglass mesh stabilizes the EPS fire as a wick fire due to the adherence of the melting polystyrene adheres to the fiberglass mesh and this causes an upwards fire spread.
[en] In this study, nanocomposites are prepared by adding nanoclay as direct reinforcement (NCD) and nanoclay as filler material (NCF) to Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP). NCDs are prepared by direct casting technique and NCFs are prepared by hand lay-up technique. GFRP composites are prepared by varying nanoclay (0, 2 and 4 wt%) and glass fiber (40, 50 and 60 wt%). Specimens are immersed in water for 70 days to investigate the effect of cold soaking. Cold soaking has adverse influence on the tensile and flexural strengths of both NCD and NCF. Moisture uptake reduced with increase in weight percentage of nanoclay and glass fiber. Addition of 2 and 4 wt% of nanoclay reduces the maximum moisture uptake by 4 and 8% in NCF and 6 and 11% in NCD, respectively. Tensile and flexural strengths of cold soaked NCD decreased by 13.9 to 25% and 13.2 to 23.7% respectively. Tensile and flexural strengths of cold soaked NCF decreased by 8 to 20% and 10 to 15% respectively. (paper)
[en] A six-month-old 245 kg male Simmental calf was referred to the Veterinary Hospital in Cuiabá, MT, with closed comminuted diaphyseal fracture in metacarpus. It was given preference to external fixation as means of fracture immobilization, and transcortical pins and fiberglass cast were used. This technique showed effective immobilization of the fracture, less expensive and feasible to be done in the field

As perdas econômicas são significativas e decorrem do elevado custo do tratamento, da perda de peso corpóreo, do pequeno ganho de peso durante o período de convalescência, e não raro a morte ou eutanásia (Anderson et al., 1994). [en] For two types of composites - particulate and fiber-reinforced - dynamic elastic properties were studied both theoretically and experimentally. The two composites contained, respectively, randomly distributed spherical inclusions and aligned continuous fibers, both in a homogeneous matrix. The theory describes aligned, identical ellipsoidal inclusions. As special cases, the theory comprises both spherical inclusions and short fibers. Bose and Mal presented previously a similar theory for continuous fibers. The theories estimate the effective propagation speed of a plane harmonic wave; the theories average the scattered field by the Waterman-Truell procedure and use the Lax quasi-crystalline approximation. Theory and observation agree quite well. Particulate composites were studied in a through-transmission water-immersion tank, while the fiber composite was studied by both pulse-echo-overlap and resonance methods
[en] A practical application of a bioimpedance technique for a detection of a bathing person is presented in the paper. It addresses the possibility of supervising people in the bathtub without voiding of their intimacy. The measurement system installed in a fiber-glass or a plastic bathtub is able to detect a presence of the bathing person, to estimate its activity and thus to detect potentially dangerous events. In the paper a principle of measurement, working prototype and measurements are presented. The proposed method can be useful for supporting and supervising bathing of elders, partially disabled or people with some health state risk during the bath and living alone.
[en] The claim of the invention concerns thermal insulation of fuel elements heated for measurement of uranium fuel physical properties. For this, layers of aluminium film and of glass fibre are wound onto the inner tube of the element cladding. The space between the inner and the outer tubes is evacuated and the tubes are spaced using spacer wires. (M.S.)
