AbstractAbstract
[en] At the request of the House Committee on Science and Technology, GAO is reporting on the modernization and management of the Nevis Synchrocyclotron, a machine which accelerates charged particles and whose beams are created for experimental uses. The Foundation has informed Columbia that the synchrocyclotron's performance did not justify further support; Columbia has proposed to continue its research at other facilities. GAO recommends that the Director of the National Science Foundation terminate funding for the synchrocyclotron project

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this research, the differential quadrature method is employed to investigate the nonlocal vibration of nanobeam resting on various types of Winkler elastic foundations such as constant, linear, parabolic, and sinusoidal types. The nanobeam is modeled with Winkler elastic foundation considering the elastic coefficient varying along the axis of the nanobeam. Within the framework of Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, first order strain gradient model is incorporated to compute the frequency parameters for Hinged-Hinged (H–H) and Clamped-Hinged (C–H) boundary conditions. A convergence study is also performed to demonstrate the efficiency, adequacy, and reliability of the method. Further, the results are compared with available data of previously published research in special cases showing robust agreement. Likewise, the effects of the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, non-uniform parameters, and Winkler modulus parameter on the frequency parameters are studied comprehensively. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Effective stress of prestressed steel bars in bridge structures is very important, and there is no compulsory requirement to test the tensile force of prestressed steel bars in bridge codes of our country. However, the lack of tensile force and failure of prestressed reinforcement will bring significant security risks. In this paper, according to the structural characteristics and anchorage characteristics of prestressed steel bar, on the basis of theoretical analysis and experiment, the curve of tension F and elongation S of single prestressed steel strand is established, which lays a foundation for effective stress detection of bridge steel bar in China. AbstractAbstract
[en] Construction land preparation is an important aspect of land remediation project. The research of materials in the process of land improvement is the foundation and the core. Therefore, it is necessary to study the materials that may be involved in the process of building land preparation. In this paper, the research on the construction materials such as recycled concrete, geosynthetics, soil stabilizers, soil improvers, building insulation materials and inorganic fibrous insulation materials, which are commonly used in construction sites, is reviewed and discussed in this paper. Land remediation project involved in the construction of land materials to provide reference. (paper) s37/01/J/AS/K

AbstractAbstract
[en] Appropriate horizontal subgrade reaction (kh) is required to evaluate stress and displacement in horizontal loading pile. In order to obtain more accurate prediction of pile behavior, statistical analysis is employed. Based on 21 data set gathered on horizontal loading piles, inverse analysis and regression analysis are carried out. The main value and uncertainty are obtained by inverse analysis, could be employed in the regression analysis. The relationship between the lateral resistant constant (kc) and SPT N value takes into account in correlated and uncorrelated condition. The results are compared with Port and Harbor Technical Research Institute (JPHA, 1999) and Japan Highway Bridge Specification IV (JRA, 1996). The computed values are found to be very close to the JPHA line and within the range of JRA lines in diameter 0.5 m and 2 m

AbstractAbstract
[en] Unique aspects of the design and construction of two small dams for the Snake Lake Reservoir Project and some of the lessons learned in the process are described. The outstanding feature of this project was that although relatively close together and in the same post-glacial channel, the foundations of the two dams were quite different. The West Dam had permeable silt, sand and gravel with deep bedrock, while the East Dam had impermeable high plastic clay and shallow bedrock as foundation. The challenge to the design was to develop a cross section that would work for both foundation conditions. The final design turned out to be an impermeable fill with toe berms accommodating the variability in the foundations. Instrumentation was used to determine when the second construction stage should commence. At the end of the construction, the reservoir was partially filled relying on the instrumentation to suggest when that would be safe enough to proceed without impacting the overall embankment stability. In the event, the West Dam foundation soils proved to be several orders of magnitude higher than estimated from grain size analyses, requiring installation of a relief valve after construction was completed. Apart from that, dam construction proceeded smoothly and the instrumentation performed as expected.12 refs., 7 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The dynamics of excited structures on the foundation soil is influenced by the interaction of the foundation with the soil. This interaction is being defined by mixed boundary-value problems of the viscoelastic soil. The method represents the elastic restoring forces, the inertia forces and the damping influences of the semi-infinite soil by a dynamic matrix of rigidity being coupled with the calculation model of the supported structure. Three-dimensional motions of a structure on an arbitrarily bounded foundation may be calculated, including experimentally determined viscoelastic material models of the soil. (orig.)
