[en] Idiopathic inflammatory myositis is characterized by rapidly progressive, symmetric weakness of the muscles that produce severe disability. In the majority of these patients, myositis appears to be a paraneoplastic feature associated with cancer. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography has been increasingly used in the detection and evaluation of occult malignancy responsible for the paraneoplastic syndromes.
[en] This book describes a novel approach to the scintigraphy of inflammatory processes of the extremities. It presents a method specially developed to bring this diagnostic modality whithin the reach of every nuclear medicine centre without requiring a special infrastructure or extensively trained personnel. The author revieuws the existing nuclear medicine techniques and critically analyses their relative advantages and pitfalls before proceeding to a detailed account of the use of a colloidal tracer for detecting and monitoring inflammation. The author identifies the pathophysiological basis of his concept and gives extensive preclinical data prior to discussing a number of comparative clinical studies with the new technique. Additional benefits are brought by the book's emphasis on the importance of a solid radiopharmacological foundation to the medically used tracers and demonstrates with a few suprising examples how shortcomings at this level may lead to misleading findings in the daily practive of nuclear medicine, even with routinely used radiopharmaceuticals. [en] Percutaneous ureteral stent insertion is a treatment of permanent or temporary urinary diversion to maintain continuity and function of the obstructed and injured ureter. We performed 31 cases of percutaneous double pig tall ureteral stent insertion in 21 patients, included 13 patients with malignant ureteral obstruction and eight patients with injured ureter as well as benign inflammatory stricture. Satisfactory resulted was obtained in all patients but one, who need percutaneous nephrostomy on week later for urinary diversion. No significant complication was encountered. The authors concluded that percutaneous ureteral stent insertion, an interventional procedure alternative to urologic retrograde method, is an effective method for urinary diversion
