AbstractAbstract
[en] The fundamentals of the theory of theoretical plate height and its use in column elution chromatography are given and the most important relations for gradient chromatography are presented. General knowledge is described related to the possibilities of separating the individual ion groups arranged according to the periodic system from the mixtures. Detailed descriptions are given of laboratory procedures used for the separation of selected elements and ions from the mixtures. Tables are given showing the possibilities of separating the individual elements from different mixtures, the most suitable types of ion exchangers and conditions of this separation are given. The principles are explained of the use of ion exchangers in the preparation of certain radioisotopes and a survey is presented of generators of short-lived radionuclides. (L.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The method is presented of separating the ions of the elements of the periodic system groups III, IV, and VIII by ion exchangers. The ions are complex-bonded to a new type of ion exchanger consisting of the polycondensates of phenol with aldehydes or ketones and containing an atom of phosphorus, arsenic or antimony with an atom of sulphur or oxygen in a complex bond. The polymers of compounds containing a double bond, e.g., of butadiene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, polypropylene, and the compounds of styrene with fural may also be used for this purpose. The method is demonstrated on a case of uranium and heavy metal concentration and the separation thereof from waste waters. (L.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This volume presents a review of the traditional ion exchange processes, ion chromatography and synthesis of resins. There are research papers dealing with inorganic ion analysis, organic acid and organic base analysis, the theory of ion exchange and novel developments, industrial ion exchange procedures and, finally, inorganic ion exchangers. It will be of interest to those who need to be brought up to date in the various aspects of processes that involve ion exchange and ion chromatography, and are now accepted as important in analysis, separation processes and process control. AbstractAbstract
[en] An improvement in a method for the recovery of uranium from a pregnant lixiviant is claimed. An anionic exchange resin adsorbs uranium from the lixiviant which contains chloride ions to inhibit the adsorption of uranyl ions. The improvement comprises employing an anionic ion exchange resin having cationic adsorption sites provided by quatenary ammonium groups with a hydroxyalkyl group as quaternizing substituent

AbstractAbstract
[en] The use of ion exchange resin selectivity coefficients has been developed to give a more detailed knowledge of the performance characteristics of mixed bed deionisation and the theory has been applied to ammonium cycle operation. Further evidence is presented to support the necessity for good resin separation prior to regeneration. A new engineering design has been developed to achieve better resin separation and this is described. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A method is described of concentrating and separating the ions of the elements of the IIIrd, IVth, and VIIIth groups of the periodic system by ion exchangers to which the ions are double-bonded. The new type of ion exchangers applied consists of the polycondensates of phenol with aldehydes or ketones, or of the polymers of substances with a double bond and containing an atom of phosphorus, arsenic or antimony and an atom of sulphur or oxygen in their molecule. The method described may be used to advantage for the removal of the ions of uranium, thorium and its daughters, lanthanum, yttrium, and iron from waste waters. (L.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The ion exchange behavior of cadmium, zinc, mercury and silver in ammonia medium on Retardion 11A8 and Chelex 100 resins containing weakly acidic cation exchange groups of complexing properties has been investigated. The results revealed that apart from a simple replacement of counter-ions, sorption of these elements is accompanied by complex formation with the functional groups of the ion exchanger. The general quantitative relationship between the mass distribution coefficient of a given metal (λMe) and concentration of ammonia (CNH3) has been derived. lf a complex formation reaction in the stationary phase occurs, λMe decreases with the increase of CNH3. The absolute value of the slope of the dependence log λMe-log[NH3] corresponds to the average number of ammonia molecules displaced by the functional groups from the coordination sphere of the central ion. Examples of the use of Retardion 11A8 as well as Chelex 100 for the separation of trace amounts of Cd, Zn, Hg and Ag are presented. (author)
