AbstractAbstract
[en] In this work we have developed a technical and economical study for the stablishment of a industrial gamma irradiation facility in Ecuador. This facility would have a multiple use, it could be used in two principal fields: sterilization of disposable medical supplies and food preservation. The technical study is related with the desing of the irradiator source and the calculation of shielding walls and the selection of same important equipments. The economical study foresees a useful life of ten years in ral values and actual values related to the year of installation wich is considered the initial year

AbstractAbstract
[en] Commercial irradiation, the treatment of products with gamma radiation principally using a Cobalt-60 source, had its beginnings in Europe and Australia 25 years ago. To date the most successful application of the process is the sterilization of medical products and, for a variety of reasons, gamma sterilization is now becoming dominant in this important field. Many other applications have been evaluated over the years and the most exciting is undoubtedly food irradiation for which there is a vast potential. The commercial feasibility of setting up and irradiation facility is a complex subject and the selection of Cobalt-60 gamma plant depends on a number of technical and economic considerations. The parameters which determine the design and capacity of the optimum plant include throughput, product size and dose requirements; a balance has to be struck between plant flexibility and overall economy. The Ansell irradiators are designed primarily for the sterilization of medical products although some experimental food irradiation has been done, particularly in Australia. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Method and apparatus for continuously and uniformly irradiating coated strip-like material in a relatively compact radiation chamber without endangering personnel by stray radiation. The coated strip-like material is caused to enter a radiation chamber containing an electron accelerator, the plane of travel is changed in the chamber by at least 20 degrees, while maintaining the coated surface free of physical contact between the application of the coating until at least the curing thereof, and the plane of travel of the strip is changed by at least 20 degrees after curing thereof.
