[en] Correlated neutron data analyzed using the Feynman Variance-to-Mean method are can be used to assess the multiplication and mass of special nuclear material (SNM) systems. After list-mode data are acquired, the multiplication and mass can be determined using detector parameters. This work compares data sets that were measured to simulated data using recent MCNP list-mode modifications. In addition, both sets of data are analyzed using both measured and simulated parameters to infer the system multiplication.
[en] Criticality safety training is an important element of the Plutonium Facility safety program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Training consists of student self-study handbooks and hands-on performance-based training in a mock-up laboratory containing gloveboxes, trolley conveyor system, and self-monitoring instruments. A 10-minute video tape and lecture was presented to describe how training in this area is conducted
[en] Charge flow in materials is controlled at the atomistic level through some model of the chemical potential, such as the Iczkowski-Margrave (IM) model. This model is built largely on heuristic arguments. Here a model Hamiltonian is constructed at the atomistic level commensurate with the IM model. Essential properties of the model Hamiltonian are presented, including a possible revision of the charge dependence in the IM model. Transitional properties of the model are shown to be central to regulating charge flow.

[en] LANL portal monitor was a modification of a previously installed (permanent) unattended monitoring system (UMS). Modifications to the UMS to make the portal were sometimes based on mistaken assumptions about exercise-specific installation and access. Philosophical approach to real-time portal differs in some areas from UMS.
[en] The author has explored the moral worlds of scientists and engineers working at Los Alamos National Laboratory where the physics packages of nuclear weapons are produced and at Sandia National Laboratory where peripheral components and the final delivery packages are produced. Reports on over 260 hours of interviews with 85 people who are currently or formerly employed are recorded. The interviews are supplemented with sensitive and detailed contextural observations on the history of the laboratories and the US nuclear weapons policy, the culture of the wider Los Alamos community, and even its physical setting. However, the book does not furnish us with profound answers to hard questions about the moral and ethnic aspects of the work of these scientists
