AbstractAbstract
[en] Recoil-distance lifetime measurements have been conducted to explore lifetime delays expected from collective and non-collective oblate (γ = ±60 degrees) structures. The 114Cd(11B,4nγ) reaction at 51 MeV, using beams provided by the Stony Brook FN Tandem, populated states in 121I. A stretched 0.5mg/cm2114Cd target foil was used with a 208Pb stopper precisely positioned at separations 20 to 5000μm. The resulting γ-rays were detected in a Ge-detector 7.5cm downstream. The mean lifetime of the 39/2- (γ = +60 degrees) band terminating state is determined to be τ = 315(64)ps (4 W.u.). This transition rate is significantly reduced from the transitions within the collective prolate (γ = -60 degrees) πh11/2 band has a mean lifetime of 95(19)ps (2x10-5 W.u.). Both lifetimes reflect the small wavefunction overlap between the oblate states and those into which they decay

AbstractAbstract
[en] Radioiodine is the only noninvasive, safe and highly effective definitive therapy of both immunogenic and nonimmunogenic hyperthyroidism. The indications are essentially the same as for surgery except the case of a goiter recidive and of recurrent nerve injury for which radioiodine is the treatment of choice. On the contrary, pregnancy, large cold nodules and a suspicion of malignancy preclude it. In huge goiters with Graves' disease surgery is preferable, too. A success rate of about 95 % can be obtained by a single high dose treatment. Subsequent hypothyroidism, however, is much more frequent in Graves' disease (two thirds within one year) than in cases with functional autonomy (3 to 10 %). The mean volume reduction approximates 40 % of the initial value. Unfortunately, in Germany the number of specially equipped hospitals that are allowed to perform radioiodine therapy is less than 100 with a total of only 635 beds. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Krypton-86 is a chemically inert radioactive gas present in the atmosphere, concentrations of which have been greatly increased by nuclear reprocessing and weapons testing since 1945. The long half-life (10.7 yr), allows the gas to mix thoroughly in the atmosphere. Ionization caused by krypton-85 increases the electrical conductivity of atmospheric air. Further increases in krypton-85 emissions seem inevitable. The increase in air conductivity due to release of krypton-85 will vary with height, and be larger over the oceans than over the land. Increases in conductivity will produce uncertain effects on atmospheric phenomena, so changes are compared in magnitude with other factors perturbing the conductivity, such as combustion aerosol burdens, volcanic eruptions and nuclear weapons testing. Conductivity changes are expected to have the greatest significance for meteorological phenomena close to the source. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The use of secondary recovery practices can increase significantly the recovery of oil from its reservoir. The practice adopted must be suited to the type of oil and the reservoir characteristics. The Tirrawarra oil and gas field in South Australia is a low permeability reservoir which is being developed using the miscible gas flood technique. Radiotracers are being used to help evaluate the process and optimise oil production. The early results from Tirrawarra are described

AbstractAbstract
[en] The rotational band in 121I that initiates on the πh11/2[550]1/2- orbital was observed to terminate via coincidence γ-ray studies following the 114Cd(11B,4n) reaction. The band termination occurred at Iπ=39/2-. Total-Routhian surface calculations reveal an yrast noncollective oblate state (γ=+60 degree) at ℎω=0.36 MeV which consists of an aligned πh11/2(πg7/2)2(νhh11/2)2 configuration with Iπ=39/2-; this shape change from collective prolate to noncollective oblate provides an explanation for the observed band termination
