Tokamak reactors for breakeven. A critical study of the near-term fusion reactor program. Erice-Trapany (Sicily), 21 September-1 October 19761978
AbstractAbstract
[en] We may identify two main areas where auxiliary heating may be used in breakeven Tokamak reactors. (1) In the start up phase of a Tokamak reactor, having a thermal energy distribution, auxiliary heating is required to bridge the gap between the ohmic state where the temperature will probably be approximately 1 keV, and the ignited condition where T>5 keV. (2) In two component and three component systems, auxiliary power is required to maintain a non-thermal ion distribution. I will follow a similar line to that taken in the above papers and will assess the auxiliary heating requirements of a 'Breakeven Tokamak' producing approximately 500 MW of thermal power, using the D-T cycle. I will consider two and three component systems insofar as they may be used during the start up phase, but not as reactor systems in their own right. In the first lecture I will not discuss details of the heating methods. Symbols and units are given in the Appendix

AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent experiments, and scalings deduced from them, have indicated that relatively high density plasmas can be produced and well confined in toroidal configurations capable of sustaining high current densities without inducing macroscopic instabilities. Here we propose to develop a line of compact devices sustaining sufficiently high plasma currents to confine the 3.5 MeV α-particles that are produced in D-T reactions. This line is proposed as a parallel program to the development of large volume Tokamaks which is being undertaken on a worldwide basis

[en] UF6 plasma decomposition resulted in conversion to UF4 and elemental fluorine only. Introduction of silicon vapors or methane into reaction zone as fluorine scavengers partially offset the reverse reactions giving rise to the formation of elemental uranium in the condensed reaction products

AbstractAbstract
[en] The apparatus is outlined and the curves showing the effect of thermal self-focusing, self-focusing before plasma formation in the neutral gas and the scattering at the time of plasma formation introduced; The self-focusing pulse is observed with amplitude being far greater than that of the incoming pulse and with the duration being far smaller than that of the incoming pulse. The mechanism causing this self-focusing is the nonuniform heating with very low threshold power measured to be in good agreement with the calculated one. Other interesting effect is also observed as the self-focusing in the excited neutral gas just before the plasma formation. (G.Q.)
