AbstractAbstract
[en] Smart grid communication network is comprised of different communication mediums and technologies. Performance evaluation is one of the main concerns in smart grid communication system. In any smart grid communication implementation, to determine the performance factor of the network, a testing of an end-to-end process flow is required. Therefore, an effective and coordinated testing procedure plays a crucial role in evaluating the performance of smart grid communications. In this paper, a testing framework is proposed as a guideline to analyze and assess the performance of smart grid communication network.

AbstractAbstract
[en] With the development of electronic, more and more distributed generations (DGs) access into grid and cause the research fever of direct current (DC) distribution network. Considering distributed generation (DG) location and capacity have great impacts on voltage profile, so use IEEE9 and IEEE33 typical circuit as examples, with DGs access in centralized and decentralized mode, to compare voltage profile in alternating and direct current (AC/DC) distribution network. Introducing the voltage change ratio as an evaluation index, so gets the general results on voltage profile of DC distributed network with DG access. Simulation shows that, in the premise of reasonable location and capacity, DC distribution network is more suitable for DG access. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Network reconfiguration for loss reduction in the distribution system is a significant way to save resources. It’s an extremely hard optimization problem because of a plenty of switches in a distribution network. This paper presents an efficient Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and its improvement based on elite strategy and adaptive position (ES-APGSA) to reduce grid loss using reconfiguration. The new algorithm can improve the speed of iterations and avoid the local convergence. In addition, the encoding method based on ring network is proposed which makes the dimensions of the particles much lower leading to an acceleration of the process. The correctness and effectiveness of the methods suggested in this paper is verified through the simulation results of IEEE33-node system. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Smart Grid become more popular, a smaller scale of smart grid test-bed is set up at UNITEN to investigate the performance and to find out future enhancement of smart grid in Malaysia. The fundamental requirement in this project is design a network with low delay, no packet drop and with high data rate. Different type of traffic has its own characteristic and is suitable for different type of network and requirement. However no one understands the natural of traffic in smart grid. This paper presents the comparison between different types of traffic to find out the most suitable traffic for the optimal network performance.

AbstractAbstract
[en] This report examines various costs for sixteen electricity distribution plants. The differences are explained by different framework conditions and different cost-effectiveness. The method of study is so formulated that cost differences that are not explained by the conditions are interpreted as differences in cost-effectiveness. The cost-effectiveness of the distribution plants are compared and an effectiveness potential for each plant is calculated using ''best observed practice'' as a standard. There are uncertainties in the results due to both method and data. The implications of these are discussed. The differences in the cost per kWh delivered are largely explained by the framework conditions, but the investigation also reveals large cost-effectiveness differences and room for improvement in many plants. A considerable part of the cost-effectiveness potential may be connected with the fact that today the owners impose on the plants goals other than effectiveness - for instance avoidance of dismissals. 8 refs., 41 figs., 9 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Load forecasting is an important subject for power distribution systems and has been studied from different points of view. In general, load forecasts should be performed over a broad spectrum of time intervals, which could be classified into short term, medium term and long term forecasts. Several research groups have proposed various techniques for either short term load forecasting or medium term load forecasting or long term load forecasting. This paper presents a neural network (NN) model for short term peak load forecasting, short term total load forecasting and medium term monthly load forecasting in power distribution systems. The NN is used to learn the relationships among past, current and future temperatures and loads. The neural network was trained to recognize the peak load of the day, total load of the day and monthly electricity consumption. The suitability of the proposed approach is illustrated through an application to real load shapes from the Turkish Electricity Distribution Corporation (TEDAS) in Nigde. The data represents the daily and monthly electricity consumption in Nigde, Turkey

[en] Highlights: • We study the techno-economic interdependence of power storage and transmission. • We identify conditions for storage and transmission to be complements or substitutes. • We underline theoretical findings by use of Italian data. • Our results may prevent design errors in energy infrastructure planning. Electricity from renewable sources often cannot be generated when and where it is needed. To deal with these temporal and spatial discrepancies, one frequently proposed approach is to expand storage capacities and transmission grids. It is often argued that the two technologies substitute each other, such that deploying one reduces the need for the other. Using a theoretical model, we show that storage capacities and transmission grids can also be complements if electricity system costs are minimized. We present the conditions that determine the kind of interdependence at specific storage locations: the characteristics of transmission congestion, i.e., during peak or off-peak and uni- or bidirectional as well as the alignment of marginal generation costs between adjacent regions. By applying our theoretical insights to Italian power system data, we obtain empirical evidence that storage and transmission can act as either substitutes or complements. Planners of long-lasting and costly infrastructure can use the results to avoid design errors such as a misplacement of storage within the system.

[en] The Electronic Systems Engineering Department of the Computing Division at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is carrying out R and D investigations for the upgrade of the power distribution system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Pixel Tracker at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Among the goals of this effort is that of analyzing the feasibility of alternative powering schemes for the forward tracker, including DC to DC voltage conversion techniques using commercially available and custom switching regulator circuits. Tests of these approaches are performed using the PSI46 pixel readout chip currently in use at the CMS Tracker. Performance measures of the detector electronics will include pixel noise and threshold dispersion results. Issues related to susceptibility to switching noise will be studied and presented. In this paper, we describe the current power distribution network of the CMS Tracker, study the implications of the proposed upgrade with DC-DC converters powering scheme and perform noise susceptibility analysis.
