AbstractAbstract
[en] Attention is given to the fact that a computer whose functioning is based on the state superposition principle can be realised with classical, as well as quantum, elements. (laser applications and other topics in quantum electronics)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We theoretically propose an alternative method to realize a deterministic SWAP gate using shortcuts to adiabatic passage based on the approach of Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants in cavity quantum electronic dynamics (QED). By combining Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants with quantum Zeno dynamics, the SWAP gate can be achieved deterministically. The numerical results show that our scheme presents a fast and robust approach to achieve SWAP gates. (letter)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An experimental investigation was made of recognition of the perspectives of model objects on the basis of the shape of the envelope of a scattered laser pulse. Stable recognition of various perspectives of an object was found to be possible even for high ratios of the probe pulse duration to the time of its propagation along the object surface. AbstractAbstract
[en] Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov was a Russian physicist, academician, one of the originators of quantum electronics, laser physics and laser technologies, winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics 'for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser – laser principle' (shared with N.G. Basov and Ch.H. Townes), Lenin Prize and State Prize winner and twice Hero of Socialist Labour. (personalia)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The article is a translation of the lecture delivered on the occasion of the 1997 Nobel Prize awarding ceremony. The author's personal contribution to the discovery of laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms is described, and applications of this phenomenon in atomic physics are highlighted. The article is completed by Mr. Steven Chu's autobiography
