AbstractAbstract
[en] Pulmonary scintigraphy by inhaling aerosols is a mean to study bronchoalveolar pathology and bronchociliary expectory function. The bronchial tree imposes many anatomical and physiological constraints. Radioactive aerosol distribution depends on several mechanisms controlled by numerous parameters such as inhaled particles sizes and its concentration. The technique proposed in this paper is an optimal method, based on the determination of laser light diffusion diagram through aerosol and, by the MIE special computer analysis method, determines the aerosol particles sizes and concentration. Real time analysis of diffusion diagram of laser light in radioactive aerosol permits thanks to direct measurement and without dilution to control stability of granulometry and concentration, and to study granulometry of aerosols produced by several types of nebulizers

AbstractAbstract
[en] Foams provide a promising method for the treatment of gas streams containing radioactive aerosol particles. A review of the literature has been undertaken to define and assess the mechanics of aerosol behaviour in contact with foams. Applications are also examined in which foams have been used to treat aerosols. Key issues are identified which require further study. In particular, the efficiency of sub-micron particle removal can be determined using recently developed analysers and the use of the process gas to generate the foam could have a major impact on the design of commercial units. AbstractAbstract
[en] A description is given of a leaktight device for detecting the particles of an aerosol comprising two axisymmetrical assemblies around the same centre, respectively fixed and movable, that can be interlocked by a locking device. The fixed assembly has a recess capable of (a) housing a detector and (b) receiving the movable assembly fitted with a filter that can be located at a pre-set distance from the detector. The fixed assembly and the movable assembly form a chamber around the detector for distributing the gas of the aerosol

[en] Circular cross-section HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters have been developed to replace the conventional rectangular type used for many years in nuclear installations to remove radioactive particulates. Among the advantages are improved sealing, easier changeout, better retention of contaminants and fewer waste disposal problems. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] It is pointed out that for an aerosol formed initially from radioactive fuel particles and non-radioactive oxide particles and subsequently undergoing both coagulation and deposition, a calculation of airborne radioactivity based solely on the usual equation governing the particle number can lead to incorrect results. A more exact general treatment is formulated for this situation, and analytic results are obtained for a simple collision kernel. (author)
