AbstractAbstract
[en] This is latest in a series of joint reports presenting results of measurements of radioactivity in the environment through the analysis of a diverse range of samples including foodstuffs, soil and air samples and other direct measurements of radioactivity in the environment from around nuclear sites and other locations throughout the United Kingdom. Both our Agencies are committed to ensuring that radiation doses are well below national dose limits to protect public health, the environment, consumer interests and monitoring the effects of industry. The report presents data for 2001 and shows that consumers were not exposed to unacceptable doses as a result of their diet

AbstractAbstract
[en] This report summarizes the results from a survey concerning the presence of caesium-137 in soil in two different areas, Verkmyraan in Gaestrikland and Nyaenget in Vaesterbotten. This has been done with a portable NaI gamma spectrometer connected to a GPS, called back pack. Soil samples have also been taken in the two areas to compare the results from these with the back pack measurements. The results from a survey of Cesium-137 1989 in Nyaenget has also been included to see if there has been a redistribution of Cs-137 in the area in the last ten years. At Verkmyraan there is an increase in Cs-137 deposition at the lower part of the catchment which probably depends on a transport of Cs-137 to the outflow. In Nyaenget the results show a possible levelling of the Cs-137 activity between the different soil types, but to verify that, more soil samples must be taken and analysed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nowadays, it is common to indicate the science on the effect of ionizing radiation on the animated and inanimated environment with the term radioecology. Fields of science, which belong to radioecology have already been subject of works before the last World War. Environmental loads due to radiation only occured because of the construction of the plutonium production plants in the USA and USSR, uranium mining, the two nuclear bomb droppings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the above ground nuclear weapon tests. In the frame of ecology a new field of science originated which from 1955 was synonymly called radiation ecology or radioecology. In the first place, the expression radiation ecology was used more often. Probably, both terms originated at the same time in the USA and the USSR. (orig.)

(orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] The present overview report show that there are many existing and potential sources of radioactive particle contamination of relevance to the Nordic countries. Following their release, radioactive particles represent point sources of short- and long-term radioecological significance, and the failure to recognise their presence may lead to significant errors in the short- and long-term impact assessments related to radioactive contamination at a particular site. Thus, there is a need of knowledge with respect to the probability, quantity and expected impact of radioactive particle formation and release in case of specified potential nuclear events (e.g. reactor accident or nuclear terrorism). Furthermore, knowledge with respect to the particle characteristics influencing transport, ecosystem transfer and biological effects is important. In this respect, it should be noted that an IAEA coordinated research project was running from 2000-2006 (IAEA CRP, 2001) focussing on characterisation and environmental impact of radioactive particles, while a new IAEA CRP focussing on the biological effects of radioactive particles will be launched in 2008.
