[en] During the early development of remote systems for processing and examining fuel and materials from nuclear reactors, the facility designer and operator worked closely together to meet the challenges of this new field. Numerous challenges still face the nuclear remote systems engineer, e.g., the development of systems that reduce the exposure of workers, the need for advances in basic technology, and the development of cost-effective facilities. The solution to these and other challenges can be accelerated by an expanded program of information exchange, an aggressive development program, and improved project management procedures

[en] Manipulator unit of the kind that includes a mobile platform carrying a telescopic unit carrier at the tip of which a manipulator arm can be moved inside a containment, characterized in that this platform is located inside a wall of the containment -at least one opening being provided in this wall to enable telescopic carrying unit of (AA) axis to be introduced inside the containment- and in that the platform is provided with a hood within which the telescopic carrying unit and the manipulator arm can be completely housed. This hood is also provided, at its opening part, with facilities for leak-tight connection to the containment wall cooperating with sealing facilities fitted to the opening and having at its other end controls for moving the telescopic carrying unit, and having connecting and supply facilities for the movements of the manipulator arm and its operation and that of its tools

[en] The radiation environment within the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) vacuum vessel necessitates the development of a Remote Manipulator System (RMS) to perform required periodic inspection and maintenance tasks. The RMS must be able to perform dexterous operations and handle loads that exceed human capabilities. The limited size of the access ports on the TFTR vacuum vessel and the performance profile, defined by the various handling requirements, present unique design constraints. The design approach and formulation of an RMS configuration that satisfies TFTR requirements is presented

[en] The remote handling device consists of a travelling crane and a manipulator support system situated on a lower level. In order to improve automatic maintenance, it is built up of individual system components. The movable components can be separated from the mobile frame. Die Fernhantierungseinrichtung besteht aus einem Brueckenlaufkran und einem in einer tieferen Ebene angeordneten Manipulatortraegersystem. Um die Selbstwartung bzw. Eigeninstandhaltung zu verbessern, wird sie aus einzelnen Systembaugruppen aufgebaut. Die verfahrbaren Baugruppen sind von ihren Fahrwerkrahmen trennbar. Deren Antriebseinheiten bleiben bei dem Ausbau der Baugruppen an diesen Baugruppen. Die Fahrwerkrahmen verbleiben an dem jeweiligen Brueckentraeger oder Fuehrungsteil ohne Antriebseinheit.
