AbstractAbstract
[en] How cooperation between mine managers and research organizations can result in practical technology and better work methods is discussed. Specific cases of how this close cooperation has helped in the U.K., Swedish blasting experiments, linear array scanners for Australian geologic evaluation, coal preparation in Canada, and deep mine problems in South Africa are given

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper gives a global vision despite the space limitations- on the specific nuclear research activities co-sponsored by the European Commission through the General Directorate Research, DG RTD, in the framework of the Euratom Treaty. After a short overview of the Euratom FithFramework Programme (1998-2002), the main research fields of the Euratom Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) are emphasised also with regard to the present contracts negotiations, as well as the coming call for proposals of 2004. The Spanish participation in both FPs is also assessed. Finally, also the support given by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and various international cooperation activities on nuclear research are addressed. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] As consequence of the changes in the energy polities of each countries in the 80th. many of the Nuclear Research Centres suffered a transformation (more of less deep) in other Research and Development Centres with a wider spectrum that the exclusively nuclear one. This year is the 50 anniversary of the Spanish Centre of Nuclear Research-Junta de Energia Nuclear. The JEN the same as other suffered a deep renovation to become the CIEMAT Centro de Investigaciones Energeticas Medioambientales y Tecnologicas (Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology). This paper is focussed on the evolution of JEN to CIEMAT besides analysing the reach of this re-foundation considering the political reasons and technical aspect that justified it and the laws in those it is based on. AbstractAbstract
[en] The demonstration of the practicability of transmutation on an industrial scale requires to perata at a industrialscale requires to operate at a European level, an experimental ADS (XADS) which will demonstrate the coupling of the accelerator, the neutron spallation target and the subcritical core. Complementary to the demonstration of the basic phenomena involved in the ADS technlogies, the preliminary engineering design studies of the XADS have to be performed in order to select the most promising technical concpets, to address the critical points of the whole system, to identify the research and development (R and D) in support, to define the safety and licensing issues, to preliminary assess the cost of the installation, and, then, to consolidate the roadmap of the XADS development. The assessment and comparison studies of the different concpetual designs of the main systems will allow to identify the most promising solutions which could be studied in detail in the next phases, and eventually realised. The PDS-XADS project is presented in this article. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of the Acyl co-enzyme A oxidase (ACOX), carnitine acyl transferase I (CAT-1) and activating protein 1 (AP-1) in the reversal of hepatic steatosis with dietary change and n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 LCPUFA) supplementation. Male C57BL/6J mice were given either a control diet (CD) or a high fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks, and then continued with the CD or CD plus n-3 LCPUFA for eight weeks. After this period, body and adipose visceral tissue weight were analyzed and liver samples were taken to measure ACOX, CAT-1 and c-jun levels. The dietary change from HFD to a norm caloric diet plus n-3 LCPUFA supplementation significantly reduced liver steatosis and adipose tissue: body weight ratio, along with an increase in the hepatic ACOX and CAT-1 levels and normalization of AP-1 expression that could favor the fatty acid beta-oxidation over lipogenesis and regulate inflammation. AbstractAbstract
[en] The light water passive plants program (PCNP), today Advanced Nuclear Power Plants Program (PCNA), was constituted in order to reach the goals of the Spanish Electrical Sector in the field of advanced nuclear power plants, optimize the efforts of all Spanish initiatives, and increase joint presence in international projects. The last update of this program, featured in revision 5th of the Program Report, reflects the consolidation of the Spanish sector's presence in International programs of the advanced power plants on the basis of the practically concluded American ALWR program. Since the beginning of the program , the PCNP relies on financing from the Electrical sector, Ocide, SEPI-Endesa, Westinghouse, General Electric, as well as from the industrial cooperators, Initec, UTE (Initec- Empresarios Agrupados), Ciemat, Enusa, Ensa and Tecnatom. The program is made up of the following projects, already concluded: - EPRI's Advanced Light Water Plants Certification Project - Westinghouse's AP600 Project - General Electric's SBWR Project (presently paralyzed) and ABWR project Currently, the following project are under development, at different degrees of advance: - EPP project (European Passive Plant) - EBWR project (European Advanced Boiling Water Reactor)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This article is a summary of the presentation of the European Commissioner, Philippe Busquen, to the European Parliament (beginning of year 2000) with the proposal and method for a revival of the Research and Development in this wider sense in the European Union. The starting point of his thesis is that Europe performs less, and more disorderly, activities in this field that her main competitors. USA and Japan. His basic proposal is a larger coordination among the european research projects, with a previous phase of informatics intoxicator among the european research centres and the cross-linked participation, real of virtual in the experiments and projects.
