AbstractAbstract
[en] Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), play a major role in loss of agricultural production. Natural substances, such as salicylic acid (SA) could possibly be involved in inducing host plant resistance against nematodes. The present study is concerned with exploring the effects of varying concentrations of SA as seed priming and soil drench on tomato growth parameters and the reproduction of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica. SA at 50 μM concentration caused only 2% of juvenile mortality under in vitro conditions. SA applied as 50 μM seed treatment caused 95% and, as a soil drench, 78% reduction in the number of egg masses that formed on tomato plants. The numbers of galls were reduced to a lesser extent. Final nematode density per gram of soil was reduced to less than 1 by the 50 μM SA seed treatment, and in other treatments decreased by between 70 and 88% compared with control plants. Our results indicate SA has potential to lower root knot nematode reproduction in tomato, and seed priming is a fairly easy method to work with. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Sodium p-amino-salicylate cannot be sterilized thermally. During manufacture or packing for medical purposes it must therefore be handled under sterilized conditions, with all the difficulties which this involves. The paper quotes experimental data to show that, using gamma irradiation, the product may be sterilized without damage and without the formation of substances harmful from the medical standpoint. [en] Fourteen compounds (1-14) namely 3-carbomethoxyindole (1), 6-hydroxy-7-methoxycoumarin (2), methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (3), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), p-coumaric acid (5), oleanolic acid (6), 4-ketopinoresinol (7), apigenin (8), apigenin-7-p-coumerate (9) apigenin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (10), acacetin-7-O-(4-hydroxy-E-cinnamoyl-(6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (11), apigenin-7-O-(4-hydroxy-E-cinnamoyl-(6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (12), -bis(4-hydroxy-E-cinnamoyl))glucopyranoside 6 apigenin 7-O-beta-D-(2 (13) and apigenin 7-O-rutinoside (14) were isolated from the methanolic extract of the whole plant of Chrozophora plicata. The structures of these compounds were confirmed by UV, IR, NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (EIMS, HREIMS, FABMS, HRFABMS) and in comparison with reported data in literature. These isolates (1-14) showed DPPH radical scavenging and enzyme inhibitory activities against enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and lipoxygenase (LOX). (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The development of biocompatible nanocomposites for biomedical applications such as drug release has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, electrospun membranes composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and shellac were fabricated because PCL has favorable mechanical and biological properties, such as high biocompatibility and biodegradability. Meanwhile, shellac is biocompatible and non-toxic; as a result, the fabricated membranes are attractive for controlled drug delivery. Here, PCL/shellac/PCL nanofiber membranes were treated by ethanol vapor to improve their properties for use in drug delivery applications. Salicylic acid was loaded in the drug delivery system as a model drug, and three PCL/shellac/PCL membrane configurations were investigated. Ethanol vapor treatment increased the tensile strength, flexibility, and transparency of the membranes. Both the tensile strength and drug release properties of the membranes strongly depended on the ratio of PCL to shellac.

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new salicylate-selective electrode based on the complex N,N'-1,4-butylene bis(3-methyl salicylidene iminato) copper(II) as the membrane carrier was developed. The electrode exhibits a good Nernstian slope of .59.1 ± 1.0 mV/decade and a linear range of 1.0 x 10-6-1.0 M for salicylate. The limit of detection was 5.0 x 10-7 M. It has a fast response time 10 s and can be used for more than three months. The selective coefficients were determined by the fixed interference method (FIM) and could be used in the pH range 4.5-10.5. It was employed as an indicator electrode for direct determination of salicylate in pharmaceutical samples

AbstractAbstract
[en] Complete text of publication follows. Redox relating metals such as Cu, Fe and Zn accumulate in tissues by aging, and produce free radicals. In addition, it is known that Cu accumulation in liver is related to hepatocarcinogenesis. We tried to reduce Cu content in liver by using metal chelators. Either thiosalicylate or disulfiram injected mouse intraperitoneally. And Cu, Zn, Fe, Ca, and Mg contents in liver were measured 24 hours after the injection. When 25, 50, or 100 mg/kg of disulfiram was injected, no metal contents were affected. However, Cu content decreased in a dose-dependent manner after the injection of thiosalicylate while the contents of the other four metals did not change. Then, the liver Cu content was observed time dependently after 5, 10, and 25 mg/kg of thiosalicylate were intraperitoneally injected and found that Cu content was reduced up to 5 hours depending on the dose. From the present results, it is speculated that thiosalicylate may be used as a therapeutic agent which removes copper from liver tissues.

AbstractAbstract
[en] To compare the efficacy and safety of Jessner's solution with 30% salicylic acid as superficial chemical peeling agents in treating epidermal melasma in Asian skin. Sixty consenting patients with epidermal melasma were randomly divided into two groups. Group A was treated with Jessner's solution and Group B with 30% salicylic acid. Baseline Melasma Area Severity Index (MASI) score was noted and peeling started at 2-weekly intervals. Sunscreen in morning and moisturizer at night were prescribed in all patients. MASI score and adverse effects were recorded biweekly. Treatment was stopped at 12 weeks and patients were followed-up at 4 weekly intervals for further 12 weeks. Final MASI score and adverse effects were noted at the end of follow-up period. Mean MASI scores were compared using paired sample t-test and one-way ANOVA. Difference in baseline, treatment end and follow-up end MASI scores was not statistically significant between the two groups (p=0.54, 0.26, and 0.55 respectively). On the other hand, within group analysis of difference between pre and posttreatment MASI score was highly significant in both groups (p < 0.0001). Adverse effects were mild and comparable in both groups. Jessner's solution and 30% salicylic acid are equally effective and safe peeling agents for use in epidermal melasma in Asian skin. (author)
