AbstractAbstract
[en] The solar isotopic composition of Sm is decomposed into s, r and p components. The anomaly pattern discovered in EK1-04 Allende inclusion can be presented as a fractionation of the average s-pattern from the average r-pattern. This representation requires a fractionation of 0.029% (amu)-1 and either (1) a 0.42% deficiency of s relative to r and a 0.15% deficiency of p relative to r, or (2) a 0.42% excess of r relative to s and a 0.27% excess of p relative to s. The nature of this anomaly suggests a systematic physical fractionation of r, s and p nuclei from each other in the initial condition leading to EK1-04. A neighboring supernova injection would not be expected to produce this anomaly. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We study the spherical to prolate-deformed shape transition in 144-158Sm and 146-160Gd isotopes with modern calculations beyond the mean field with the Gogny D1S force. We compare the results with the shape-phase transition predicted by the collective Hamiltonian model and with the experimental data. Our calculations do not support the existence of a first order phase transition in these isotopic chains in the viewpoint of the Bohr Hamiltonian neither the interpretation of the nuclei N = 90 as critical points.

[en] The shape transition in the Sm isotopes is studied in the framework of the s-d IBA model using the most general hamiltonian. It is found that only three terms are necessary to reproduce the transition and obtain an excellent fit. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Stable isotopes comprise a very large portion of the periodic table. They find a wide variety of applications, which include serving as precursors for radioisotopes and radipharmaceuticals and as accelerated particle targets. Isotopes of the lanthanides, with very high boiling points and low natural abundances, are often difficult to separate by conventional electromagnetic techniques. Photoionization is a potential alternative method. We have devised a system in which an atomic beam of the rare earth metal is admitted to the ionization region of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Photoionization is achieved using a pulsed, two-photon laser scheme. Preliminary results from the photoionization of samarium are discussed
