AbstractAbstract
[en] Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) is an advanced NDT technique which has the inspection capability in wall loss detection and measurement of sharp defects such as pitting, grooving and circumferential cracks in ferromagnetic samples. The working principle of MFL involves the induction of magnetic field in the part to be tested and the response or signal produced is analysed to determine the presence and characteristics of defects. In this paper, simulation and experimental work on wall loss detection in steel tube using MFL were carried out. The simulation was performed using Comsol software and followed by experimental work using MFL system for validation. The results from the simulation and experiment indicates that variation of the groove defect affect the magnetisation and the output of the MFL signal is related to change of flux caused by the detection of wall loss. AbstractAbstract
[en] This is the fifth in the series of Pan Pacific Conference on Nondestructive Testing held once every two years. The honour of hosting the conference is shared among those countries bordering on the Pacific Ocean, this year the responsibility being granted to Canada. The call for papers for this three day conference attracted significant interest. This provided the Technical Program Committee with an extremely difficult task in reducing the overwhelming response to only 46 (plus 10 alternates) for presentation at the conference, and inclusion in these proceedings. The selected papers provide an international perspective on advances in nondestructive techniques such as ultrasonics, eddy current, radiography, magnetic particle and liquid penetrant, as well as their diverse applications in the various countries involved

Eddy currents - practical determination of optimal testing frequency for non ferromagnetic materials

AbstractAbstract
[en] This work presents an alternative practical option for easier, lower cost and reliable determination of the optimal testing frequency, when using eddy currents testing. This option uses another standard tube produced with the material similar to the tubes to be inspected, where only two discontinuities are worked: one passing hole and another equal diameter external cylindrical hole, with depth equivalent to 50% of the tube thickness. Using this standard, the las step is to adjust the eddy current device frequency to a value which allows a 90 deg angle between the signals coming from the two holes

AbstractAbstract
[en] The testing station of the Scientific and technique study centre of Aquitaine is described. Materials and systems are evaluated by mechanical tests (vibration, shock, centrifugation), climatic tests, ballistic tests etc. In particular it is equipped for fire test of active container (30 B with UF6), explosions, UF6 release. It has the agreement of the Ministry for qualification of packaging for dangerous materials transport

AbstractAbstract
[en] The paper presents the proceedings of the 21st Annual British Conference on Non-Destructive Testing held at Newcastle upon Tyne (U.K.) 1986, and organized by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing. The papers are arranged in five principal categories - general papers; ultrasonics; acoustic emission, vibration and sonic techniques; magnetic and eddy current methods; and radiography. Of these papers, three papers were selected for INIS and indexed separately. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This report presents the theoretical and experimental underlying principles of the eddy current technology in such a manner that a simple computation base results in order to obtain from the complex test coil voltages those physical and geometrical properties of metallic test objects that are measurable by means of electromagnetic methods with optimum test conditions. A number of hitherto unknown quantitative relations are derived which facilitate or partly actually render possible the application of the eddy current measuring method in non-destructive material research as well as during destructive technological materials testing.
