AbstractAbstract
[en] In order to produce a complete performance assessment for a Canadian waste vault some prediction of container failure times is required. Data are limited; however, the effects of various possible failure scenarios on the rest of the vault model can be tested. For titanium and copper, the two materials considered in the Canadian program, data are available on the frequency of failures due to manufacturing defects; there is also an estimate on the expected size of such defects. It can be shown that the consequences of such small defects in terms of the dose to humans are acceptable. It is not clear, from a modelling point of view, whether titanium or copper are preferable

[en] The paper presents results of a study on damping properties of VTZ-1 and T-8 titanium alloys with three- and four-layer platings including plated copper, nickel, chromium and enamel as well. Six variants of laminated platings (total thickness of each being 90-130 μm) are studied. It is found that application of laminated metal plating evokes a 16-60 fold increase in the flexural vibration decrement at room temperature, and a 22-8.3-fold one - at higher temperature (up to 250 deg C) as compared with unplated specimens. A four-layer plating proved to be the most effective for it provides a maximum level of vibration damping in specimens of smaller total thickness than a three-layer plating
