AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper reviews the status of radioactive waste management programmes in some selected European countries, both in some that favour direct disposal like Sweden and Finland, and in some that reprocess spent nuclear fuel like France and the United Kingdom. This paper also discusses the approaches taken of some other countries such as the Netherlands, where implementation has been deferred. On the bottom line it can be concluded that disposal of low and intermediate level waste is implemented successfully, however, that the status of national programmes for high level waste or spent fuel differ considerably between the countries observed. The societal process for siting of such facilities proves to be particular sensitive and one may observe that siting procedures based on volunteerism and partnership with potential host communities are potentially most successful. AbstractAbstract
[en] The uses of activated carbon other than industrial waste treatment are covered in this bibliography of worldwide research. These citations cover the use of activated carbon in air pollution, textiles processing, absorption of chemicals and radioactive isotopes, drinking water treatment, the mining industry, and electrochemistry. Its properties are also discussed. (Contains 211 abstracts)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This research attempts to obtain proof of a novel concept of encapsulating hazardous wastes in a water-extensible polyester matrix to yield solidified products having rigid, light-weight shock proof structures which could be safely stored, transported and disposed of in burial grounds with minimal danger of environmental contamination. Progress is reported in two parts, one dealing with laboratory investigations and another concerning semicontinuous pilot plant studies based on the results of small-scale experiments. The study, concerned primarily with low-level radioactive wastes, is also extended to other industrial chemical wastes. Experimental plans and procedures are described for the investigation of the compatibilities of the wastes with the delicately balanced polymerization system. The laboratory studies are successfully extended into the pilot plant stage in a pilot plant constructed to achieve immobilization of the wastes in three steps: (1) batchwise preparation of the waste solution or slurry in an aqueous medium; (2) continuous emulsification by continuous, simultaneous addition of the waste solution/slurry and the encapsulating polymer resin; and (3) solidification of the emulsion in small-volume cans by emulsion transfer from Step 2, on a sequential basis, followed by initiator addition

AbstractAbstract
[en] Bacterial denitrification by Pseudomonas Stutzeri has been chosen as the method for removing nitrate from the effluent stream of the Y-12 uranium purification process. A model was developed to predict bacterial growth and carbon and nitrate depletion during the induction period and steady state operation. Modification of analytical procedures and automatic control of the pH in the reactor are recommended to improve agreement between the prediction of the model and experimental data. An initial carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) mass ratio of 1.4-1.5 insures adequate population growth during the induction period. Further experiments in batch reactors and in steady state flow reactors are recommended to obtain more reliable kinetic rate constants
