AbstractAbstract
[en] A compilation of whole-body counting existing across Canada was prepared by AECB (Atomic Energy Control Board) staff. This work was initiated so that AECB staff and other concerned parties would have this information readily available, especially during urgent situations. This report is to be used for reference purposes only, as it makes no attempt to judge the present state of the art of whole-body counting

AbstractAbstract
[en] The sliced Bottle Manikin Absorber (BOMAB) phantom was originally proposed as an alternative to a commercially available phantom, but it suffers from the disadvantage of containing over 160 sources that need to be manufactured; however, it was found that the number of slices could be reduced substantially and that two slices in the sliced phantom gave the same performance characteristics over a wide energy range as a conventional BOMAB phantom for a particular counting system. This work explores the adaptability of this phantom to another counting geometry. The response of the Human Monitoring Laboratory's whole-body counter measuring this phantom with a decreasing number of planar sources has been modelled using MCNP5 over a wide energy range (122-2754 keV). It was found that the best agreement was obtained when the phantom contained 10 sources, 1 in the mid point of each section. As this is a different result from a previous finding, any other counting geometry will have to be assessed to determine the optimum loading if the sliced phantom is to be used. Also, it is clear that this type of phantom cannot be used for an intercomparison that will encounter different counting geometries, unless it contains a full loading of sources. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Intercomparison measurements on 9 persons were done at 30 whole-body counters in Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and Federal Republic of Germany. Previously the radiopharmaca 57-Co-vitamin B12, 59Co-vitamin B12, 59Fe ascorbate and 131I hippuran-iodide was administered to them for medical and scientific purposes. Difficulties of calibration are discussed. 7 figs., 1 tab. (qui)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Full text: The implementation of a new integrated and practical working tool called ALEDIN within the Personal Dosimetry Service (PDS) of TECNATOM, have harmonized the methodology for the counting acquisition, detector calibration and data analysis using a friendly Windows (registered mark) environment. The knowledge of this methodology, due to the fact that is the final product of a R and D project, will help the users and the Regulatory Body for a better understanding of the internal activity measurement in individuals, allowing a more precise error identification and correction, and improving the whole process of the internal dosimetry. The development and implementation of a new calibration system of the whole body counters using NaI (Tl) detectors and the utilization of a new humanoid anthropometric phantom, BOMAB type, with a uniform radioactive source distributions, allow a better energy and activity calibration for different counting geometries covering a wide range of gamma spectra from low energies, less than 100 keV to about 2000 keV for the high energies spectra. This new calibration methodology implied the development of an improved system for the determination of the isotopic activity. This new system has been integrated in a Windows (registered mark) environment, applicable for counting acquisition and data analysis in the whole body counters WBC in cross connection with the INDAC software, which allow the interpretation of the measured activity as committed effective dose following all the new ICRP recommendations and dosimetric models for internal dose and bioassay measurements. AbstractAbstract
[en] This thesis presents a comparison of measured results in a whole-body counter using two detector types - an 8''x4'' NaJ(Tl) detector and a 5''x2'' Phoswich detector - with corresponding results obtained by calculation. Small-volume calibration plates served as a point source and plastic flasks of about 100 cm3, filled with radioactive solutions, were taken as larger-area homogeneous radiation source. The measurements and calculations for point sources were made with the radionuclides Am-241 and Co-57, the solutions in the flasks contained J-125 and Co-57. The comparison of calculations and measurements covered the energy range from 13.9 keV (Am-241) to 136 keV (Co-57). (orig./HP)

(orig./HP)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Thanks to the design of the high purity germanium detectors, the use of this detector becomes more and more interesting for whole body counting systems. The advantage of this detector type over the conventional NaI(Tl) detectors is its superior resolution and peak to valley ratio. These features are especially useful for accurate whole body measurements. 6 figs.; 1 table

AbstractAbstract
[en] In case of any Nuclear (N) emergency-the personnel at site are exposed with radiation both externally and internally. Whole Body Counter (WBe) is meant for measuring contamination inside human body due to gamma emitting radionuclides. Although, globally WBC in stationary structure is available in various countries, there has been scanty published information on mobile system for rapid deployment at disaster site. Whole body Counting system for Mobile use demands many pre-conditions: like shielded enclosure temperature-moisture controlled, positive pressurized environment, rugged integration etc. for accurate measurement of internal contamination of human body. Present paper disseminates about BELDRDO designed shelterized WBC on TATRA 6x6 vehicle
