Description
Recent international developments which facilitate application of radiation processing of food as a physical method of food preservation are described. The benefits of the treatment to food industries in developing countries are explained, which include, among other things, overcoming quarantine barriers to fruits in international trade, eliminating certain pathogens in frozen food, reduction of chemical residues in food, low-energy requirement, etc. Case studies on the economics of existing and planned commercial food irradiators are provided. Examples of commercial food irradiators which could be economical for developing countries are given. (author)
