[en] Design evolution of the Intermediate Heat Exchanger for the U.S. Fast Breeder Programme is traced from the initial FFTF through to the Clinch River Designs and anticipated onward Commercial Plant Concepts. Supporting development work is outlined. Technical merits of certain features, such as sine wave tube banks and replaceable tube banks (in-situ), are weighed up against quantified cost advantages with simpler arrangements. Future design trends are outlined which will lead eventually to fully optimised designs. (author)
