AbstractAbstract
[en] The question is discussed of the occurrence of plutonium, namely of isotope 239Pu, in the air, soil, water, and animal and plant organisms. The prevalent part of this isotope comes from nuclear tests in the atmosphere. Methods are described of determining plutonium, and the detected concentrations are given. It is estimated that 11 to 25 PBq (300 to 680 kCi) of 239Pu has escaped into the earth's atmosphere. Up to now, fallout on the northern hemisphere has amounted to 74 GBq (2 mCi) 239 Pu/km2. (J.B.)
