AbstractAbstract
[en] This is a manual published by Science and Technology Agency, Japan, to use mainly for municipal radiation survey as standard instrumental analysis in which measurement of the kinds and concentrations of radioactive nuclides contained in environment is performed with NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometers. In the manual, untreated samples or pretreated samples by drying or incineration are the object. As the method of analyzing the obtained data, method of comparison with the standard sample, continuous distribution subtraction method and simultaneous equation method are employed. The manual aims at the analysis of up to several nuclides in a sample and the detection of radioactivity of tens of pico-curies. It comprises 10 chapters including introduction, definition of terms, selection and installation conditions of the instruments, sample holders and the standard sample, adjustment and use of the instruments, performance and testing methods, counting efficiency and its determination, pulse height distribution curve and quantitative and qualitative analysis of a single nuclide, separation and quantitative analysis of mixed nuclides, recording and reporting. Tables for possible nuclides released into the environment from nuclear power plants, examples of pulse height distribution curves for various nuclides and those of soil and sea bottom sediments are presented.
