AbstractAbstract
[en] This Safety and Environmental Impact of Interim AFR Storage at the BNFP--FRSS examines the site specific impact of conducting away-from-reactor storage operations at the Barnwell Nuclear Fuel Plant. Included in this evaluation is the radiological and nonradiological consequences of storage of four different capacities (360, 830, 2250, and 5000 MT) with retrieval at three different times (the years 1995, 2000, and 2005). Also included is an assessment of the impact of spent fuel transportation to the AFR. The radiological impact on operating personnel is well within regulatory limits for all scenarios, and the 50-year total body dose commitment to the population within a 50-mile radius is less than 0.2 man-Rem. Exposure of the general public and transportation workers combined is a maximum of about 62 man-Rem. Accidents that could reasonably be postulated to occur during facility operations resulted in negligible exposure for the hypothetical individual at the site boundary. Nonradiological consequences are also negigible for both normal and accidental releases. The probability of an accidental fatality occurring during the construction and operation of the facility for its lifetime is a maximum of one out of two, and during transportation, less than one out of four, based on the latest available accident statistics
