[en] A limited number of old exposed air filters from a network of sampling stations extending the length of North and South America have been analysed for many trace elements. (The network is run by the United States Department of Energy Environmental Measurements Laboratory). The objective was to assess the possible value of a large program of such measurements for providing information on the trace element concentrations in airborne particulates existing at the time of sample collection. On the basis of the evidence obtained, it is considered that valid information could be extracted in this way. In view of the extent of the store of old filters, which cover about a 10 year period up to the present day from stations spread over the North and South American continents and elsewhere, such a program appears to be well worthwhile.
