[en] Arguments for the development of inherent safety features in the LMFBR are presented which indicate that better public acceptance and licensing appraisal will result. Fast Breeder Reactor Safety RandD program strategies established by the Department of Energy are shown to effectively support and encourage the development of inherent safe design features in the LMFBR concepts. The status of these programs and recent results are discussed. The reactor vendor's view on the presently most desirable inherent safety system is discussed along with the rationale supporting this preference. The benefits for continuing to enhance the inherent safety of the LMFBR are also measured against perceived incremental risk reduction
