AbstractAbstract
[en] The long-term hazard of spent nuclear fuel is dominated by the actinides. To develop a solvent extraction process for the removal of these elements a number of considerations have to be made. Factors which have to be taken into account includes the separation factors necessary to obtain sufficient reduction in actinide content together with minimal coextraction of other elements, commercial availability of reagents, minimal degradation of chemicals by radiation, minimal generation of secondary waste etc. Based on these considerations, a process for the actinide separation has been designed. Uranium, neptunium and plutonium are removed in an initial extraction cycle at 6 M nitric acid, utilizing HDEHP as reagent. In a second cycle, nitric acid is removed by extraction with TBP. The removal of nitric acid facilitates a third extraction cycle where americium and curium are removed also with HDEHP as reagent
