AbstractAbstract
[en] The controversy surrounding nuclear waste disposal is recalled and misconceptions regarding the dangers involved are corrected. The following conclusions are drawn: Adequate, but not necessarily optimized, nuclear waste disposal technology is available. A key to meeting public safety criteria with available technology is the reduction of the concentration of fission products in the only solid waste form demonstrated to date: borosilicate glass. After about 1000 years the hazard level of the high-level waste generated during the burnup of nuclear fuel is less than the hazard level of the uranium ore mined to produce the amount of fuel that produced the waste. 21 refs
